Hello everyone.

I have recently made a storage box for my TT out of EXT grade MDF, do i need to coat it with anything like varnish or something to protect it or will it be ok under the elemants.

Any comments appreciated

Certainly need something to seal it.......

Are you attaching this to the A frame? If so I would maybe paint the underneath in Hamerite paint. Im sure there is some special paint in DIY shops for this, or a spray can of some thing!!

Ps. If you have the plans on your pc, I would love a copy

Yes it's attatched to the a frame but is detachable during storage. I think i'll just wrap my tarp round it and strap it together on this trip and i'll seal it in the summer. If we have one

Try a few coats of hammerite and then yacht varnish. Have you got a boat chandlers near you.

If its good enough for the outside of a boat it should do well on your box.

Hi MJD

the main thing about using external MDF is to make sure the joints are sealed, get water/moisture into them and it will not last very long.

Personnally, I would suggest giving it 2 or 3 coats of a watered down PVA (external grade) and letting that dry.  Then apply undercoat and a couple of coats of external gloss.

Giving a coaot of gloss every year or so would keep it it good condition.

Hope this helps.

Andy

I agree - you should first coat it in PVA. The best PVA to use is "Gripfill" - you can get it from Toolstation or Screwfix. Once dry its impervious to water. and any paint you use will stick to it like Sh**. !!  I would use an outdoor spirit based paint Like Johnsons "Stormseal" rather than just gloss. As Andy said - the joints are vunerable. Make sure you coat these properly.

Regards

Ken.

I made a box for the top of my combi-camp and just painted it with outdoor gloss. Been ok for over a year.
