we are green as grass when it comes to camping, yet am desperate to try it out.  What are the best trailer tents around and what do we look for when buying second hand as I don't want to end up with a dud!!!

Hi Tooth Fairy there are quite few options for Trailer Tents and you may want to look at Folding Campers as well. I have a Raclet which I love, good value for money and has been a good T T. Before that I had a Conway which was also very good. There are also Sunncamp, Trigano, Cabanon, Combi Camp etc etc and everyone will have their own reason for choosing them.

I would suggest buying a good second hand one to find out if you like the unit and then you can always move on..... Look at every option you can to get an idea of layout and size.

Hope you find a bargain and have many happy times camping

Go look at the new ones on display in your local camping shop, you'll get a good idea of what to expect and what may be right for you. Apart from the colour and tent size, there's not a lot of difference between them IMHO, although others on here maybeg to differ.

We had a Cabanon Mistral and it was fantastic, although we only kept it 6 months and bought a tin tent, now on our second van. A mate of mine has just picked up a Nova NR for £50, with a wrought iron frame on top that will carry bikes etc. It's the most unappealing brown colour but he's chuffef to bits with it.

Cheers

Mick

What sort of camping do you intend to do? If you are doing lots of weekend trip you might be better off with a FC but if you go somewhere and stop for longer you'd be fine with a TT.

Yes, the things you need to think about are ...

1) How many of there are you? Adults/kids?

2) What kind of camping do you hope to do? Weekends only? Long stopovers of a week or two? Long distance touring, moving on every two or three days for weeks?

3) Budget. VERY important!

4) Where are you going to keep it? If in a garage, how big a garage? Some TTs can be stored on their sides, folding campers are usually bigger than trailer tents.

5)How fit are you? Apologies if this sounds rude, but if you`re an elderly couple then some trailer tents are harder to put up than others.

While you think through that lot, start reading. Google up all the commom brands and read the descriptions on the dealers websites. Look up "trailer tents" on Ebay...you`ll find folding campers there too. Ebay is a goldmine of pictures of the interiors of trailer tents. Look through the reference section on the Conway site...

http://www.conwayowners.org.uk/units.htm

...this will show you the Conway catalogues back to the year 1985, with all the specifications.

You`ll find that the confusing mass of information starts to make sense after a while. This is the time to go and start looking at a few, if you have a local dealer. If you don`t, try the local campsite!  Most folk will be happy to show you round their unit.

And ask questions. Someone here will know the answer, that`s for sure.

If you buy second hand insist on seeing it fully erected and check all the poles and canvas are there in good order.  If you want to use it just for weekends buy one where the main unit can go up on its own and you don't always have to put the awning up.

Hi Toothfairy, when looking to purchase TT or FC, look at the kerb weight of the unit for towing purposes. Some units may be small but heavier than a larger unit.Depends on what you are towing with.
A good place to look is the NTTA which has a Guide to Safe and Legal Towing

Hi

Welcome to the world of mad campers!

I have recently bought a reaclet flores 380. I have to say I love it to bits, but then i am a bit biased because it's mine.

It goes up so easy even the awning area part. got mine for £2000 new inc awning area with kitchen, plenty of space and option for under bed tents as well for extra sleeping area.

The beds are really comfy!

I looked at a couple of second hand ones thats what got me wanting one but i am glad i waited a couple of weeks and bought this one new for the money it was a bargin. It all depends what you are looking to pay and what sort of size etc you are looking for.

Good luck hunting hope you find something

Louby

have a look at the new combi-camp too, the only uk dealer is in Oxfordshire and its a small run company with great customer service - nothing too much trouble....the sleeping area is really roomy and different bed versions are available with a king sized slatted bed for 2 or family version sleeping 4, all opens in seconds with no pegging of main unit.....but then I'm a bit biased...Have fun anyway!! mary
