We have just bought a Conway Challenger camper. I have never towed one of these before, just a few questions for the experienced ones;

Will I need a towing mirror?

Will I need a stabiliser?

We are picking this up from near Chester, so we would need to know by saturday if possible, please?

Thanks Peeps

Pete

Doubtful on both Pete - I towed a Challenger (1989/90, I think) with a 950cc Talbot Samba (kid you not!!) with neither mirrors nor stabiliser!  Only time it was bit hairy was when one of those 8-legger cranes had a blow-out as we were overtaking it and bounced us into the outside lane of the motorway (thankfully there was nothing around!!), but you can't blame the car or the trailer for that!!!!  Having said that, you can pick up a towing mirror for a fiver - at least you would have one for the driver's side then, if you decided you weren't happy with the visibility from the car's mirror.

Enjoy the unit.

Thanks for that scampi. Using a vauxhall corsa 1.0 3 cylinder to tow it. I towed my mates conway carmuge (i think). This is 200kg heavier, but i think ill be ok, im ok on the legal side, I can legally tow 750kg. We'll have to see how it goes.

Thanks again

Pete

Hi,  I had a Challerger for one season, no problems with snaking at all, also if you can see clearly down each side of the trailer I don't think you will need a mirror. You should be able to see over the top and get a good rear view from your interior mirror.

We towed a Conway Challenger with a Citroen ZX estate and they were about the same width so we didn't need towing mirrors and most of the time we could see over the top as well - unless we'd made a hasty exit in tipping rain and just chucked everything under the cover!

Just towed an 89 challenger back 60 miles for friends. We tow a continental normaly and have to say the challenger was light as a feather, never even knew it was there (well untill I spotted we were doing just over 70 and had to slow down). Don't think you will have any problems

Although you may be able to see perfectly well without towing mirrors, they are is fact a legal necessity

It may actually be illegal to fit towing mirrors to your car. The law states it is an offence if they project more than 200mm from the side of the vehicle or trailer, whichever is the wider.

I recently towed a Challenger back for my brother and it was about the same width as the car so if I had fitted towing mirrors then I would have broken the law so be careful.
