You should ALWAYS have fluid in your battery!!!! If your plates are showing while you are charging, you risk shorting your plates and ruining your cells (toss one battery). Before charging, take off the covers to the cells and look at the fluid level. If the level is below the plates, add DISTILLED Water to the cell (just below the INNER lip to the opening) then charge. After your battery is "charged" you should test the battery with a volt meter. It should read between 13.8 and 14.2 VDC. Then after an hour, again test and it should be the same. If the value of 13.8 (minimum) is reached after charging, bring the battery to your nearest mechanic and let him look at it.
Remember, charge your battery only in an open well ventilated room with the cells open!! DON'T SMOKE or Stick your Eye close to the opening!
