Thanks for putting up with me endless questions folks, here's another...

We didn't connect up our stove last time we went away but obviously need to before going for a fortnight but have encountered some problems - I imagine thet can be simply solved if only we knew how..

1) Have bought 907 Camping Gaz: it won't fit in the space for it in the TT kitchen. So.. we either need a smaller bottle (would need refilling all the time, surely) or a longer hose (is that possible? don't you lose pressure?) so it can sit on the floor. Which would be best?

2) I assume that the regulator is the same as long as it's still Camping Gaz (i.e. doesn't vary with size?)

3) the hose is difficult to connect to the kitchen so that will have to stay on. So.. when disconnecting the bottle (I assume you do for travelling, would have to anyway if we stick with the larger size) do you take the hose off the regulator and leave regulator attached to bottle OR do you screw and unscrew the regulator? (I'm assuming it's the first because you can't turn the regulator enough to screw it in if the bottle is attached to the kitchen?

I know all the above is probably dead obvious but having only spent two nights in a tent in my whole life....

Help?

Hi Hodge, Wecome to the UKCS.

From memory you can buy rubber gas hose in 1 mtr lengths. Longer that that is no longer allowed to be sold.  This should allow you to move your gas bottle to a better location.

Camping Gaz is not the cheapest out there.  Its advantage is you can get cylinders all over Europe.  Calor is cheaper per kg of gas. If you get a 4 kg calor cylinder you should find it will last you for a few weeks camping, hence you wont need a refill when in Europe.  Not sure but I reckon the regulator is the same across the Camping Gaz range.  You will need a different regulator for a Calor bottle. You should isolate the gas for travelling.  In case of Camping Gas unscrew the regulator from the bottle.  On calor you turn the valve shut. The hose connections should be secured with jubilee clips at each end.

I think you will be surprised by how long the gaz bottle lasts.  When tenting - our small gas bottle lasted us for 4 weeks and I cooked the whole time.  The regulator only alters when you switch to Propane

Hi hodge72 - You can buy the hose in whatever length you want. If you want to extend the hose and can't disconnect it at the kitchen end, you can use a coupler to extend.

I'd be inclined to use a detachable 'quick-release' coupler. Connect the male end to your existing kitchen hose. Connect the female end, via an appropriate length of new hose to the regulator. This will make it easier to attach the regulator to the cylinder and you could make up different regulator connections to use Calor or Campingaz etc.

I use www.bes.ltd.uk for LPG fittings. The website is not especially easy to navigate, so if you need some help finding what you need just shout.

Thanks for help folks - we bought a slightly longer hose (just over 1 metre) and it's now all attached - cooked baked beans on toast for my little boy tonight so I can say that the kitchen is functional!!

Camping Gaz last for 20hrs of continuous use!! Depending on how you use it ie kettle, we use electric, but it usually lasts a good 2 weeks, cooking most nights.

Yes you can buy hose at whatever length you wish.

I have the 907, and take it out of the kitchen and place underneath the kitchen when in use.

I reckon I will cook for over 20 hours when away for a fortnight! Porridge in the morning plus toast for husband, and I'm a bit flash in the kitchen and can't see any reason to stop eating decent food when we're camping! Time to start looking for a CampingGaz supplier near St Ives!
