hello all, my husband and I are totally new to camping but like the idea of a TT for more comfort.  We particularly like the camplet royal or combi camp but we have 3 kids, 10 yr old twins and a 12yr old and also 2 cocker spaniels!!!  What do you all think would be the best model of TT to go with, bearing in mind ease to erect and a large living space and sleeping room for 5 peeps and 2 hounds.

I would really appreciate any replies as I have been searching the net for days now and I think my heads gonna explode soon!!!

Cheers guys

Linda

hi and welcome to the site!! Depends how you like to camp I suppose - I have a combi camp venezia which is the same size as the older more plentiful Family plus model - ie with annex. This summer we had our family - 2 adults, 2 kids (13 & 8) and my niece (13)- no dogs. We had 4 in the two double bed areas with divider which when on our own we don't use as it feels more roomy, and one blow up mattress in the annex - the older annexes are a good bit bigger by the way and easily sleep 2 with space extra. If space is most important then the combi might not suit. A Camplet with an add on awning like the one just sold on ebay (to check it out search for camp let and then click on the completed listings box on the left in blue to get an idea) would give more room but would still only sleep 4 in comfort in the beds - but you could add another inner tent in the awning??
I know what you mean about your head exploding!! Also see my link for cc owners group

thanks Marynov, yes, I did think maybe an inner tent in the awning for one of the kids and the dogs.

Phew...   this is major headache cos we havn't even camped in a tent before let alone the whole family in a TT!!  lol.  Anyway getting fed up of the package to Spain etc. so are the kids and it's getting quite pricey when you have that extra child......  all affordable deals are for the family of four!  Crazy really when you think how many families are out there with more than two kids eh?  Aw well back to the searching, trouble is me an hubby's heart kinda lost to the camplet/combi camp now, especially the pictures of it stored on its side in the garage.

Thanks a lot anyway, what do you families of five or more use?  Please any more advice warmly and most gratefully appreciated.

Linda

...don't get me wrong you could easily manage but when you look at the size of some of the trailer tents about the cc's and camplets are small - they def go up quick, my daughter is adult size at 13 and me and hubbie are alas not on the small side - short yes, small - no!!
I know of an older 4 berth combi for sale that you could try and sell on if it didn't work, there is always the option of a day tent too ie 3m x 3m sunncamp day room or Outwell Oklahoma for day time space. Have you checked the finished ebay auction - type in no. 290023039649
in completed listings - the usual seen camp let unit is minus the big awning - so if you got one with the extra you'd have tons of room.....let me know if I can help keep a look out or anything for you...cheers, Mary

ps in that listing the bottom pic is the camplet as you usually see it - opens up in one swop, and pics at top show it including add on awning....

With the standard Camplet Royal you could sleep 4 comfortably but the living space would be a little bit tight (I can confirm this having spent a week with 2 adult-sized teenagers, myself and a 10 year old in ours!) However if you had the side annexe or the additional awning (I doubt you would need both, either/or would be fine), you would have plenty of room for your brood. Alternatively, you could have a pup tent alongside (for a child or two or the hounds) which would be a cheaper option. Good luck with your choice.

I do recommend you go and view some TTs, if you can, to get a handle on what they are really like. There is only so much of an idea you can get from surfing the internet, it is much better to see them in the flesh.

I so agree about the cost of going abroad when you don't have the standard 2plus2 family. We have 3 kids and when it came to paying adult prices for the oldest, we gave package tours a miss. For a few years we tried camping in France with Keycamp or Eurocamp, in a mobile home or ready-erected tent, which was fine. But unfortunately my OH has never really liked camping
We have also had some great holidays youth hostelling in this country as my OH doesn't mind 'roughing it' a bit although he draws the line at camping. Having said that, some of the YHs we have stayed in have been very nice and in fantastic locations, and quite a few family rooms are ensuite.

we have also looked into eurocamp etc, to test the water so maybe we should really go that route first, just to get a feel for it    Maybe we should even try a good family tent first, I know a few friends of mine have stove, ehu, cool box we could borrow to see how we like it.

The only place really near to us that we can see TT set up etc is in swansea and when I rang them today, they only do raclet TT's so maybe we will have a look around more in the flesh so to speak.

I must say thankyou so much for your replies,it means a lot to hear from experienced peeps.  I am so excited about the whole thing, don't want to shell out a fortune and then realise it's not for us after all!!!!!  Most of our impulsive buys are now festering in the garage     Promised myself wouldn't be too hasty this time so watch this space.  Methinks its time to get out there and see some real TT's in the flesh lol.
