I have a Pennine Pathfinder (950kg) that I need to get into my garage which is up a 1 in 10 slope. I have been looking at the manual winch because of the low cost. Does anyone have a similar setup and can recommend what size of winch to buy. I'm afraid I have given up trying to get an answer from the Machine Mart people.
You can also try www.ntta.co.uk who provide all sorts of guidance and info about winches and how to fit them etc.
I bought a 2000lb electric winch (£65 from an e-bay shop) to pull my Cruiser (900kg) onto my front garden. I thought I might need to use the middle pulley block to double the pulling power but I don't. You can see how it looks here
I must say Mike I'm very impressed at the level of detail on your web page. It does help me build up a little confidence. I have a 10 foot long 1 in 10 drive to pull the unit up and If the cable or the winch broke the unit would probably end up in the bedroom of the bungalow opposite -not good.
You use a 2000lb - (1000kg or there abouts) winch. I know my unit only weighs 950kg if you was to pick it up off the ground, so I'm sure a 2000lb / 2500lbs winch would easily cope on this slope.
hi adi, we have the same situation with drive. i bought a 2500 1b hand winch + cable from machine + mart approx £60 for both, have used it 2 yrs with no probs. the drive is 25 ft long so also use 10 ft of tow rope.pulls up + down in 2 mins on my own.before use to take 3 adults to push it. also not havin the worry on the journey home if you can,t get a push up is a bonus.
There's no need to go over the top when buying a winch, your unit weighs 950kg dead weight and what you are trying to overcome is the rolling resistance (you are not trying to lift it) so a winch with a capacity of 500 to 800kg would be ample
I'm sure you would be OK over that distance, as big roy has mentioned its rolling weight that you are dealing with. If you are worried you can loop the cable through a pulley with a hook on it which attaches to the FC, and the cable doubles back to a mounting point near the winch. This doubles the pulling power but makes the process a little slower - not enought to worry about though.
I found my winch on e-bay by searching for 12v winch and looking for one that had the pulley block included. I also went for a new from a shop rather than second hand but that's just my caution.
Have a look on Ebay I bought a hand winch from a regular seller in Saltburn North Yorks complete with a 60ft wire rope and hook, made up a mounting plate, sawed off an old tow ball, drilled down through the centre (the hardest part of the project)countersunk the top of the hole then mounted it to the plate with the winch on the other end. Have look on Towsure`s website and you can see where I got the idea from, also in my local dealers they sell a similar item complete for about £65. My winch cost me £15 and the other bits and pieces I already had, I use this to pull my Avondale Mayfly caravan into my allotment a distance of about 25ft I have an anchor post in my allotment to which I hook the wire rope to. I stand by my "A" frame and can winch my 1100kg (max weight) van to its parking place in under 10 minutes on my own
I want to store my Pennine Fiesta in the garage but need to put it in backwards so the A frame is near the door so I can attatch the hitch lock and apply the handbrake and need to use a winch to get it up a small slope.
Thus the winch hook will be connecting to the rear of the camper. There is no obvious place to hook it up.
Any suggestions ? I could climb under the camper a connect to sub frame but this could be awkward to do regularly.
I'm not totally familiar with the Fiesta but I suspect you have two options.
1. To mount some type of eyelet / hook under the rear of the unit that you can then attach a cable to.
2. To attatch a length of cable or strong rope to each end of the axle, near the wheels so that they do not slide along the axle. The cable/rope should be long enough to create a triangle that has its point at the back of the fiesta. You can then hook your winch cable to this point. You have effectively made a removable A frame to the back of the unit. The hardest bit will be to work out how to secure the cable/rope to the axle or hubs.
I have a pathfinder and could store it in our garage except the garage is full of other things, so no room. Got no where to store the pathfinder other than at a caravan storage place and it's quite expensive. Besides which it's in Bromborough and we live the other side of the Mersy tunnel. I was wondering if any one knows of or has any storage facilities in the Merseyside area (Crosby, Waterloo) preferably. I would pay, but am looking to cut my costs of over £5.25 per week. Don't mind a couple of quid
