We have just had our first outing in our cruiser, and we had a great time. We had no ehu,so ran fridge and lights of the gas. The weather in Cornwall was very warm,so we didn't need all  the warm bedding that we took. BUT everything was damp in the morning, despite ventilation. What can we do to stop this? Not that I'm fussy, but dry knickers in the morning would have been nice!!!

Hi Muddler,

Glad you had a great time.

I am suprised that you said everything was damp! we also have cruiser and we don't have any problems at all.

We have made shelves in the wardrobe for all the underwear and towels etc, and the rest of the clothes we leave in bags in the day tent that we stand in front but to the left of our awning so that we can walk straight in, the toilet is also in there, so everything is out of the way.

Where are you keeping your clothes?

I am wondering if it could have been some fumes off the gas, I might be wrong but doesn't propaine produce water droplets? I think I read a post on the equiptment forum about it. Surely the lights were run off your battery.

Hi muddler,
you need air movement (rather than a draft) in your ventilation to prevent the moisture in the air making things damp. Best you can do is keep your knickers under the bedding or store them in a plastic bag.

We had a gas light in the awning, and 12 volt lights in the cruiser!.I think that the shelves in the wardrobe sounds a good idea, a little project for the winter ,me thinks.

The damp seemed to get into the curtains, cushions etc, and all our bedding felt damp in the morning. This was one reason that we sold our tent. Perhaps its just a problem you get when the mornings get cool!

I think it's to do with the coolness of the night air at this time of year.  The combination of gas appliances (all of which produce water vapour, whether burning propane or butane) and your breath will mean there is plenty of water vapour in the air to condense out as the temperature drops.  Unfortunately, I don't know what you can do about it!  Keep your undies in a sealed plastic bag is the best I can come up with (perhaps one of those bags you squeaze the air out of to reduce bulk - less air = less damp).

We were down in Cornwall a few weeks ago. The air was very damp some nights, even tho' we didn't get a lot of rain, and towels hung in the awning which had been dry the night before were damp in the morning. It didn't happen every night tho' so I suspect it was to do with the weather.

The first time you unfo;d a TT/FC after it being stored for a while it can feel rather damp until you give it a good airing out. I wonder if this could have been the problem with the cushions and mattresses feeling damp?

Hi,

The gas lamp would have significantly contributed to the dampness. I assume you turned it off and went to bed without ventilating the awning and camper. All of that nice warm moist air would have condensed on any surface which was cool. If you think back to pre double glazing, your windows always had condensation on winter mornings. Personally I would always ventilate a heated awning/camper before bedding down if condensation is a problem.

For this reason rechargeable electric lights may be a better choice.

regards

Pengwyn.

The dampness in your trailer or caravan is from the occupants, cooking and washing and the atmosphere.

We each perspire and breathe out lots of moisture both day and night. This then floats around until it settles on cold surfaces like windows. Ventilation is no cure all as the air outside also has a high moisture content especially in autumn winter (fog, rain, snow).

We use a £6 electric heater bought from Tesco to warm the air overnight but we need to be on a EHU. It is 1 or 2 kw which is 4 or 8 amp. We would not camp without in winter or summer for that matter. Even in summer you get a lot of dew which is very damp.

Alternatively you could use an electric dehumidifier as this is designed to recover the latent heat of evaporation as it dries the air and they are very energy efficient. You get a lot more energy out than you put in. For example a 150 watt unit gives out about 600 watts whilst running, enough to warm a small house.

We also experienced that 'moist' feeling in the mornings in France during the summere and it was HOT!  The dampness came from the direction the weather was coming - from the North and subsequently it was carrying lots of moisture which then condenses on cool surfaces.  The condensation on surfaces not inside the  caravan was incredible.  After a month of being there, the parched grass area which was our pitch had wonderful lines of foot high grass where the canvas had dripped.
