Hi my brother in law is today going to look at a second hand tt and we are going with him, I was hoping someone on here would be kind enough to give us a list of things to look out for.

We have a tent but BIL seems to want to go one better lol and get a TT but we dont want him to be ripped off so any advice would be great.

Check all zips fixtures & fastenings are in working order and that poles and canvas are sound.

Also check wheels (is there a spare?), tyres, chassis, electrics, and that you are confident in putting it up! 

See it erected. Being there while its put up would be even better.

I'd look closely at all pole joints; these are what get damaged if the thing hasn't been put up / taken down carefully. Pay particular attention to the point where the awning poles attach to the main unit.

And obviuosly as has been said, condition of canvas and zips is crucial. Check bed bases and mattresses, and peg elastics too.

Don't get too bothered by things that will be easy to resolve, e'g if its only got three pegs etc..

Its worth having a look at a few so you get a feel for what is the going rate.

thankyou all for your advice my brother in law is now the proud owner of a tt its a Conway and thats all I know but I did pay particular attention to the zips and things and it looks sound.  I am really jealous now because he paid peanuts for it .

Red, all advice above is sound.  You've gotta see it up really to check all the bits and bobs.  Pole joins, clips, zips etc all wear out- but all bar zips are an easy fix with spare parts.  Good haggling curency though if things are worn.

Also, the trailer itself should be checked.  See if the running gear looks ok and that basic maintenance has been done- grease etc.  Spare tyre?  Towing hook etc.  Lights work?

Ask them when they last treated the canvas if its more than 5 years old

check all the rubbers that hold the window flaps down etc.. If the are perrished its an indication of wether the tent is stored damp. and check for musty smells. But see it being erected and folded..

Check that the trailer cover is in good condition as they are sometimes overlooked and can be expensive to replace.
