I'm trying to book a pitch with a caravan club site (i'm registered with them) but they want to know if its a caravan, a trailer tent or a motor caravan. I know its not a motor caravan but strictly speaking its not one of the others either! which would you say?
They also need to know the length, its a dandy destiny (1995) anyone know how big it is when set up?
The Caravan Club, like many other sites, don't recognise the Folding Camper, to them it's a Trailer Tent. Does it open like a trailer Tent? if so measure the width of the trailer and multiply by three, thats near enough, they only want one measurement but it must be the erected length, and they don't charge extra for awnings.
We book on as a Trailer Tent. The Destiny is 5.18m long when opened. All the measurements are in the file section here You'll have to join to see them though, it is worth it mind you.
if awning is extra charge tell them its a trailer tent as the awning on trailer tents are usually free but if the awning is free tell them its a caravan saving money on the way, thats what we do.
When I first had a T T I joined the caravan club by mistake at a show went and joined on the spot told they welcomed T T's. They were very kind and yes on many sites they did accept T T's. After that I joined the caravan and camping club....
Yahoo has a group for Dandy owners with some very helpful people and I am sure they can help you with the dimensions of your unit. It is free to join and there are all sorts of free resources.
Even better the Dandy owner club which you can join for £15 a year is sure to able to help you... Also you get a voucher for (2 free nights) for your first rally, effectively a free rally. I joined them and found them an endless source of information on everything.
Have noticed people tend to classify you as a trailer tent, but you can make a case for a caravan. In fact my Dandy, 98 one, has folding caravan written on the side.
According to the Caravan Club they treat all trailer tents and folding campers as caravans - however they like to know which you've got as it may affect the pitch allocation. They do actually make a distinction in their literature between TTs and FCs but it's not very clear.
Where it can get complicated is when booking in to some termporary campsites as DEFRA are insistent that tents are separate from caravans, and say that "by implication" this implies trailer tents must be pitched with the tents. This affected me at one rally last year - so this year I've booked as a caravan but added "folding"!
