We have a lovely warm fan heater, hot water bottles etc, but our daughter really feels the cold. Last year she froze (apparently) every night despite hot water bottles. The one night we turned the fan heater up we all roasted to death just as she was toasty.

I've noticed Argos are selling an underblanket for £12.99 - does anyone else use them? Should I go for an under or overblanket? Just wondering about the thin mattresses in our Sterling and bedboards....?

a fleece underblanket

2 fleece underblankets stitched together to make a sleeping bag liner

a small heat pad, also from argos, in the medical things section I think (not as bulky as a full blanket.)

We take duvets. Tried the sleeping bag - she still froze. Actually, we have fleecy liners (somewhere) that I had forgotten all about.

We tried something last year which really made a difference, we purchased some camping mats and placed then under the airbed.

The mats we used were thermally lined with a foil type backing, seemed to do the trick

What does she wear in bed? Because fleece socks, a thermal long sleeved vest and warm PJs are almost enough for my five year old to end up sleeping on top of her sleeping bag in our trailer tent, and that`s in Scotland in April. Also, check how much dead air space she has inside her sleeping bag...kids and skinny folk usually do better with mummy bags, fill up any excess space at the bottom with a fleece blanket and give her a fleece liner as well.. And get her a 4-season sleeping bag too. Folk sleep on top of mountains in tents in winter in just good sleeping bags, so they can be bought.

As to electric blankets, well, up to you, but I`d personally rather give up camping rather than let my child sleep on an electric appliance hooked up to an EHU in the middle of a wet field. (Yup, I`m paranoid....or have a healthy respect for campsite electrics, your choice! ) Domestic electric blankets are rated for inside use only, remember.

We use electric blankets in our tent and find them ACE.  No probs at all, and a good nights sleep!

We purchased some camping mats and placed then under the airbed as well as some foil lined mats, they worked really well. Camped at the start of April, make sure you wear a hat, they say about 80% of your body heat escapes from your head
