Here's a question for those who prefer quieter spots...I live in Hertfordshire and have been camping in England many many times but have never come access a site where my nearest neighbour is not in view. I'd love to find somewhere where it's quiet and I'm not surrounded by 100's of other tents. Any suggestions anyone? Or am I asking too much?

Find a handy farmer.  You'd be hard pressed to find a campsite like that, it's not exactly going to be a money spinner is it but if you could find a farmer happy to let you camp in his field you could have all the peace and quiet you crave.

I, too, yearn for that elusive campsite where you are not surrounded by loads of other people and feel like you are on your own. I have spent many a happy hour trawling through the campsite reviews on this website finding interesting-looking places, though as yet I have not been to many of them.

At Easter we went to New House Farm near Builth Wells, which is a small site, but as we had gone at a quiet time there was only one other tent there the first night and no one else the second (plus it is very reasonably priced and the farm house cooks a mean breakfast!)

Other sites I have spotted here are: Garn Isaf (Wales) which has a limited number of pitches, and each pitch is surrounded by earth banks (downside - very expensive); Ty Parke (Wales) which has just ten pitches on a very large field (downside - also very expensive and you have to book a full week during school holidays, which rules it out for me as a teacher who doesn't want to camp in one place the entire week); Fforest Fields (Wales) and Hole Station (Devon) always looks nicely laid out offering the possibility of more secluded pitches, though they seem to be very popular places.

There is one that I can't find again which only has about 4 or 5 pitches and each one is almost completely secluded in its own area (which I think have firepits and covered seating areas), but I can't for the life of me remember where it is (frustrating) though I do remember it was extremely expensive; if I am going to spend that much on a holiday I am going to rent a cottage! Perhaps someone else knows where it is?

The most promising-looking ones seem to be those with very limited numbers of pitches, but because of that they have to charge a lot more to make the money. If anyone knows of a reasonably priced place I'd be very interested!!

We used to go to Thorpe Woodlands where we were well known as regulars and we liked the quiet. The warden (Pat) would let us go into the "overspill" deep amongst the trees that was only normally used when it is really busy. Give that a go!

Millie Nomad's link looks interesting.

I was going to suggest a search for "Club CL/CS" on Camp Site Search - Certificated Locations/Sites of the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning Club repectively, which are usually very basic and inexpensive but which can only accept up to five caravans/motorhomes plus (C&CC only) tents.

You would need to join the appropriate Club, which may be possible on arrival.
