I got back today after four days at the squirrel with the family all of who loved it, especially the wee man (5), after Jim and Jelboy left, the campsite filled up really quickly to the point when a couple of tents had to be pitched in front of the toilet block. Being in the family section though we had plenty space around our tent and fire. The missus loved it too and cant wait to go back, I'm really surprised at this as I thought she wouldn't last without her EHU.
Cheers again Jim and Jelboy for helping me set up on Thurs.

By Jings Jim..At this rate we should have a fair whack of UKCS members using the Red Squirrel this time next year...
You have been preaching the gospel about that place for a while now...and people are beginning to take notice...That's Me...and Torque and family all converted in the space of weeks...Keep going...and you could have enough folk for a proper meet!!!
Glad the family enjoyed themselves Torque...I thought all them midgies as you set up might have proved too much for them...But from what I saw the wee man was having a ball when I left...Keep up like this and there will be no room for anyone under Jim's tarp...And we will be playing musical chairs round the fire....
No doubt I will hear all about it when you get back to work!!!!

Hiya been wanting to try Red Squirrel and show the kids boy (8) & girl (6) some real camping have tbh bit of a lightweight here.... but was a wee bit put off because heard it can be a wee bit rowdy sometimes! Not adverse to ppl having a good time but can't do without my sleep!
Is there a lot of families who camp there? we are away to Blue Dolphin first 2 weeks in July but also have the fair week off so was thinking could do a few nights then if weather decent?

Hi Elaine, I wouldn't be put off by what you have heard. I am not that rowdy
Seriously though, Hugh has set aside an area of the (22 acre) site specifically for families and if that doesn't suit, there is an ultra quiet area away from the fire pits.
Most of the noise if any is caused by large groups and even they tend to keep it quiet after 11. They also tend to use the bottom end of the site so as to cause minimum disruption to other campers.
You are more likely to be woken by the dawn chorus- cuckoo, chaffinch, song thrush, blackbird and even buzzard! Red deer have been spotted wandering through the site and the scenery is stunning! Check out some of my threads and you will see!
Your kids will love it - river, trees, fires, NO TV!!!
I've been to the Red Squirrel twice now..and have yet to see any rowdiness...Latest I was in my bed was around 12am and it was all quiet...One or two families there last week...And Torque and his family met others when they stayed on over last weekend..
Of course I cant speak for every week/weekend..I think like other campsites you just have to go and take your chances....But both my visits have been quiet "Chill out" times for me....There is an area marked as "Ultra Quiet" at the top end of the site near the wardens caravan..You could ask for a pitch there if ones available
There is a rule re fires being out by 11pm...And I have heard the wardens come round and put them out if their still going...Never actually seen this as the site has been quiet at night when I've been there...
Hope this helps...
Jelboy.

Hi Star1234,
I am just back from the squirrel and the campsite was mobbed, there was no rowdiness at all the whole weekend and we were pitched right next to the entrance to the site. Only noise after 11pm was people coming back from the pub and people going to the toilet block and generally everyone kept noise to a minimum, dont let this put you off this amazing site.
