Not that I've done it, but the Camping & Caravanning Club has regular District Association meets & there'd be ones in your area. They also have sub-sections & I think there's a lightweight camping one, or one for tenters. (There are other sections too, like one for people who take boats camping, for example.) These sections also meet up regularly. And CCC has Temporary Holiday Sites with social things laid on. From reading letters in the CCC magazine, solo campers are made to feel very welcome at any & all of these. Having said all that, I used to take myself off with my tent, a good book & a nice bottle of wine to a nice site that felt safe (you can't lock a tent door) and have a great time doing just what I wanted to do. A dog helps too...
