If I remember right it used to be possible to purchase a motorhome VAT free if the disability met certain requirements, however knowing how customs & revenue operate they may well have closed that loophole. You need to find a participating motor dealer who would know all the regulations of what is available. Good luck.

Although it has nothing to do with the motability scheme, if you contact the motability expert at whichever dealership you are using, they "should" know all about it.

But basically, you can purchase a brand new vehicle (it must not have been registered yet) VAT free if it has been specially adapted (before registration) by an appropriate specialist for a disabled persons disability. The disabled person has to sign an official declaration to state as such. In our case, the special adaptation was to install a wheelchair restraint system in the back of the car for my wife's wheelchair. It was done by a company which specialises in disability adaptations - the dealership arranged it all for us, we just had to write out a seperate cheque for the adaptation.

Hi, you can use your disability allowance how you want. I use mine
To buy a car from a dealer and have brought several cars this way.
If anything happens to me TOH still has the car which is not the case
If you use Mobility scheme, the car goes back.

Welcome to the Forum.
This topic is over nine years old and I don't think any of the people who replied post on here any longer.
Maybe someone else might know.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

If you purchase a car it becomes your property so if you are no longer eligible for PIP the car is still yours. If you lease a car through the Motability scheme it belongs to Motability and will go back to them at the end of the lease period or when your eligibility ends.

The Motability website explains how their scheme works.
Hope this helps.

WE use the mobility element of PIP to pay for our own vehicle which we can sell or trade in at anytime. At the end of a mobility lease you get nothing back, but with your own car, you get a few bob back.
