I used the tunnel twice now, last year and this year, and yes there were checks.
None going out to France, yes to coming back by UK Border control to check for stowaways as in people.
They asked to check my van at the back to make sure I was not carrying any people as they could not see the back of the van very well from the front windows, especially the bathroom.
They did ask if I was carrying LPG (no).
The reported issues with Products of Animal Origin (POAO) at the onset of Brexit does not appeal to apply anymore. However, IMHO, one should be prepared for POAO products carried onboard to be confiscated if they are found during a search.
Not sure the OP is carrying a dog/cat/ferret, if yes, then yes there were checks. For UK side, it is after check-in, whereas on the French side, it is before check-in.
