I've just bought a VW T5 caravelle which has a bed pack so can be used to sleep in. I already have an Outwell Montana 6 tent that we've been using for a few years though and will continue to use as there are 5 of us plus 2 dogs.
I've been searching high and low to work out if there is anykind of universal awning/access attachment from a tent to a van. I've seen the new Outwell California Highway awning which has a separate section which attaches the tent to the van (this looks perfect) but Outwell wont sell it separately.
Does anyone else attach a regular tent to their van and if so how?
Love our Outwell California Highway! I know that doesn't help, sorry!

Found our Nivana ❤️
What about looking at a basic "tunnel" extension, which could be "turned around" and fitted up against the side of the van(facing out) and then slipped into/over your existing tent?
It could even be used on it's own,as a sun/rain shelter...
As regards improvising a tent for a vehicle awning, the only permanent alterations to the actual tent need only consist of velcro-strips sited throughout the zip-away canopy panel. This enables both (1) a draw-string cavity to its lower edge and (2) similarly equipped side-screens (e.g. home-made from oil-skin material reinforced at cut edges). Adding looped provision for pegging, a continuous draw-string can span up, over and down the vehicle. Also the tent can still be used as originally intended. My Eurohike Stowe (£60 down from £120 end of season sale) serves me as well as a dedicated product priced nearer £400. Back-slippage can be combatted by running cords along the van roof to the w/wiper spindles.
We actually have a drive away awning, which we prefer to pitch at right angles to the van in the summer. We use it as a conservatory, so handy for lounging, dining, storage etc, without taking sun from the van itself. Or if it is really hot, we can put the van in the shade, and pitch the awning to catch the sun. It has large windows on three sides, and we can roll the back up if the sun is coming in that way too! Perhaps you could try something similar with your tent?
Hi
An old post I know but bingham40 I wondered what you did in the end?
I'm looking at hooking up an existing tent I have to my T5 Caravelle and am hitting brick walls :(
Thanks
Doubt if you will get a reply from bingham40 as they have never been back since posting in 2013.
Someone else will probably be along with some advice.
Oh and welcome to the forum.
When you get time it's always good to fill in your location and outfit details in your profile. 😊
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Yes. Save for loops & toggles which I've hand-stitched to my Eurohike-Stowe tent, it's not really altered and its canopy remains usable in pole-supported mode if required. The main additions that enable vehicle attachment are two oilskin tarp' sheets finished at their edges complete with drawstring cavities incorporated. I've also supplemented the tent canopy with velcroe strips close(ish) to lower edge to aid drawstring attachment. 'Not bad considering the tent was priced £60 (down from £120) compared to that of a similarly sized dedicated vehicle awning.[URL=http://ukcampsite.co.uk]http://ukcampsite.co.uk[/URL
P.S. I've since supplemented the tent (+ Fore-mentioned taps/oilskins)with home-made loops & toggles as velcroe alone wasn't strong enough. Although one couldn't be expected to alter a new(ish) tent, for fear of invalidating the leakage guarantee, manufacturers should DESIGN their products to be 'this way' versatile. But, either way, my revised assembly is performing and wearing well.

I'm experiencing great difficulty in connecting my Photo-Gallery's contents to this site. I've tried pic-emailing them to your formal website without (although intended) reference to your Message Forums.
By siting home-made Loop & Toggle assemblies on the tent's canopy I've been able to attach tarp'-screens to its edges. Said screens have had 3 edges stitch-reinforced whereas remainig edge of each screen has a cavity incorporated to aid insertion of a drawstring. Back-slippage of tent's integral canopy is combattedby utilizing the van's w/wiper spindles.
What about sourcing oilskin tarp' material and mating home-cut square/rectangular acreens to your tent's lift-up canopy? These could either be (a) permanently stitched or (b) affixed via owner-added Loop & Toggle features (existing velcroe features wouldn't be strong enough).
