Was given a pre-wired tailboard with a 7-pin plug to use on motorhome when carrying bikes at night. Checked it out with and old leisure battery and everything did what it was supposed to. Purchased a prewired 7-pin socket and installed at back of motorhome - Hymer b534 2013 - intending to splice the wires into the rear lights. When I did a dry run the appropriate tail board light would flash briefly and the van light would go out. Disconnect and turn off ignition. Van light comes on fine.
I’m assuming that trying to light two bulbs (van plus tailboard) confuses it. Would it work if the tailboard had leds?
Or any other answer or suggestion appreciated.
Thanks
Enormous thanks to birdman101, Ernie DB and 664DaveS for your valuable and prompt advice. I have discovered over the years that anything you do will always require the purchase of something else - especially if you were given the first bit free!
I have ordered the relay and will post news of my success or an appeal for further help!!

Lights and number plate need to be visible at all times to comply with the law, not just at night.
Thanks Bernie47.
All van lights are visible day and night but thought I would utilise the 'free' tailboard for use when the bikes on the rear rack are covered.
