We have done our research and decided what MH we want. We have found one thay fits our criteria but now have a dialema. We are getting conflicting advice from friends who have purchased several MH and obviously more experienced than we are as this will be our first MH. One friend is saying wait until early in the new year to buy and get it cheaper when the markets slow and the other friend is saying if we've found what we want buy now as the prices dont fluctuate much.
Can any of you give us the benefit of your experience as to which of these two streams of thought are probably more correct than the other.

Personally I don’t think it makes a huge difference - and I’ve bought and sold one or two over the years - and tend to agree with buying it now if you’ve found it.

I would say that prices don’t fluctuate that much and if you have found your dream van to act now.
We missed out on a couple of vans earlier this year by not being decisive (although it all worked out in the end).
Some say that winter is actally peak trading time as those buying new do their deals to secure production and delivery in time for the spring),
Having said that, If you don’t think you will use the van over the winter leave It until after Christmas. After all the value in a motorhome is using it not looking at it on your drive.

If it's an uncommon model - and everything about it is OK, buy when you get the chance - you may not see another for some time (or have to travel the country for one).

True, but there will be many winters, and I do recommend using the van all year round.

Don't know about motorhomes or camper-vans, but in my opinion the best time to buy a second-hand caravan is just before Christmas. Loads of them on sale then, but few people looking, so prices are rock-bottom.
Move on a few months and peoples' thoughts are about the coming summer, so that's when they start looking at caravans. Naturally, prices rocket!

Quite a few dealers have offers on 2018 vans now as they are waiting for the new 2019 models to arrive so now is perhaps a fairly good time to buy.

I'd agree..if it's what you want, get it now..and just plan on using it through the winter months(rather than "mothballing" it on the 'drive 'til next summer!)
When we still had our "proper" motorhomes, I used to really enjoy our impromptu winter weekend getaways and the occasional Christmas Market etc..

Thanks to everyone for the advice. Now all I have to do is persuade my other half maybe it would be a good idea to go and see the MH I have found which fits our critrea and the dealer is only 22 miles away.
We aren't keen to store it on the drive (even though there is room) as it would be too obvious when we are away. So he can't see the sense in buying now and placing it in storage.
However I can see the sense in Captain Lightnings point "If it's an uncommon model - and everything about it is OK, buy when you get the chance - you may not see another for some time (or have to travel the country for one)".
Another option is just to wait until later in the year and hope it hasnt gone. Its a late model and up for over £35000 so there may be a good chance it wont go quickly now its getting later in the season.
Mmmmm I sense some interesting conversations coming up....

Give some further thought to keeping it on the drive. The joy of doing so for us is keeping it “ battle ready” so we can go off at a moments notice for either weekends or day trips.

I'd second what motorhomeguy says...
..and whilst it may be true that a motorhome missing from the drive' would/could signal an empty house, is that really much difference to having an empty drive' when you're out, or away, in the car?....
If it'd bother you, take steps: Ask a neighbour to us the driveway on the nights you are away? Definitely have the house lights controlled by automatic/timed light switches etc..
Although the "..can't see the sense in buying now and placing it in storage" line sounds like you/he has no real intention of using it 'til spring anyway..? Which I think would be a real shame.
(and whether it be sitting in storage or on a dealer's forecourt, keeping a van idle doesn't do them any favours what so ever..)

I could have suggested many things re now or next season. That seems to have been covered in much of the above.
I will say just one thing that many do not realise.
The registration of the vehicle does not signify anything other than when it first hit the road. It is not the year of manufacture, it could be as many as 2 years older than that. The significance of this, being the need for a thorough check of tyres, and all external piercing of the bodywork (including the roof)and window cut outs. A van that has been outside for a couple of years prior to registration can be considered to be as old as the date of manufacture, check it.
Oh, I have thought of another thing... Do it now not later. Some really good deals to be had back end of the year. Dealers need room for their new 2019 Models, which when you think about it, most will still be for sale in 2019. LOL.
