Can I just point out that it's not a good idea to run without a thermostat.  It will wear the engine out eventually, because it won't be able to reach the correct temp.

I once had a 38 ton MAN tractor unit that took to running a little on the warm side. I removed the twin thermostats and drilled about 4 1/8th inch holes in the flat disc part of the therrmostats, then refitted them.  Worked a treat..... it allowed just that little bit extra water flow,to control the situation. It kept it's cool perfectly after that !

   So...there's today's top tip for you !!

I have an aircooled, so no water problems  (smug), I would recommend you put a thermostat back, you would have to drive around a long time without to do any damage, however, the main reason is you would be running your engine cold for too long, so your engine will run on choke for longer than normal, hence increased fuel consumption and it will start to 'soot up' your inlet manifold and inlet valves because of the excessive rich fuel mixture.

Euro Car Parts are good for basic items if you have one in your area, or as billy said John Austin VW should be able to supply one.

Hi, Sorry to bring concern to the table but---

Please do not run your engine for long periods without a thermostat as it will only disguise the problem, I reckon you have a sticking thermostat due to winter standing and maybe a lack of antifreeze or -- the viscous fan coupling is faulty, unless of course it's electric, worst case, head gasket has burst, check the colour of engine oil if it's creamy the gasket has gone or if the exhaust is very steamy,

Test thermostat by placing it in a pan and boiling it, the thermostat should open just before boiling point although with today's energy costs it might be better to replace it which should be done every few years as good practice.

Good luck.
