There are motorhome hire companies, so they could hire one for a week and see how they like it. It is expensive, but not as expensive as buying one and then finding out it isn't for you!

As for trying out a caravan: I haven't heard of companies that hire caravans, do you or they know anybody who has one? If so, they could perhaps try one out that way.

What a brilliant idea to hire out a caravan or motorhome or even both vehicles to see the difference between the two and like Ina points out in her post although it is not a cheap option it is better than wasting thousands of pounds on buying a vehicle they cannot get on with. Plus what a perfect excuse for 2 seperate weekend breaks  ?

Keep us informed what your parents decide cate73 and if any of us on this forum can be of any further help to them with tips and advice etc I am sure we will all try our best to guide them as best as we are able to.

I think hiring to try is a very good idea.

Has you father ever towed before ?

Petrol is more expensive with a MH

If its a large MH are they planning any trips round narrow devon lanes?

Would it be their only form of transport even at home?

Not sure how old they are but are they fit to hitch/unhitch a caravan.

There is also storage to consider.

Regards

Robin

Thankyou so much for all the replies and your kindly words of wisdom.

I've passed all your replies on and their thinking hiring definantly seems the way to go (before parting with all their hard earned cash!).

First time I've posted on here and can't believe what a helpful, friendly lot you are so thanks again!!!

With regard to Robin52's comment - I wouldnt dream of a petrol MH, the Sloop has a 2.3 diesel and i'm getting around 30 to the gallon both general running and high speed, some similar sized Fiat based vans only have 1.9 petrol engines and the guy I asked was ashamed at the mpg it ws so poor.

Fully agree its personal preferrence. I towed a caravan, didn't like it lack of vision behind, preferred trailer tent as you could see over the top of it, like the MH no worries about snaking, and if you go out for the day you have all the facilities

The important thing whichever they get - USE IT and ENJOY IT.

We just returned from our first tour around Europe in our MH.  Now the first thing that struck my wife and I was that there are hell of a lot more motorhomes on european roads than there are caravans.  On campsites, caravans are are very tightly packed together and have to be man handled into position.  There simply isn't the space reversing in tow.

Yes with caravans, your left with the car for sight seeing, but this too can be a nightmare finding a parking space.  MH's on the other hand have their own dedicated parking allowing overnight parking in the heart of the town or city for as little as 5euro a night or even free.

As for petrol versus diesel,  well diesel wins everytime, driving an MH or towing a van you really need a gutzy diesel when tackling the seemingly endless climbs on European motorways.  Oh and remember towing caravan your treated like a juggernaut and have much srticter speed limits and NOT allowed to overtake when dictated by the signs.

I like other writers think hiring a motorhome for a week would be an excellent idea, take a trip down to the Alps then ask yourself if you would like to be towing van.
