Hi I think it really depends on what you are looking for and doing etc.

Had you asked me a year or two ago if I would change my touring caravan for a motorhome I would have said 'no way' but I really wanted to go to Spain and Portugal in the winter and Hubby said that he wouldn't feel happy tugging a caravan all that way.................then what with the cost of fuel for the 4x4 to tug the caravan etc we started to think about a MH. The final straw was when towing the caravan the motor mover touched a small kerb and the mover burst the tyre, the mover itself moved back 4 inches and we were stuck on a bad junction for a couple of hours.

We saw the Fiat Bolero (which a friend recommended to us) and decided to change to a MH to be honest we haven't looked back. The size of it makes it easy to move around and also park in supermarkets etc whilst still allowing us plenty of living space for two people and two dogs.

Our biggest adventure so far has been a month away, travelling from Calais and down to Portugal, which I know we would never have done towing the caravan,

We find we can be off a site in less than ten minutes.........we have had breakfast on the seafront etc to us it is now our home on wheels.........I can see the disadvantages of not having a car, but we love the freedom of two electric bikes too.

With a caravan I think and this is looking at the coin from both sides, is to take and park on a site then go out in the car. With a MH you more or less can head off where you like when you like simply unplug and go. I think it is something only you can decide.

On the plus side for us we have saved a fortune on fuel and tax etc on the 4x4 and now have a smaller car for day to day use, the MH fortunately is very economical too.

Good luck whatever you decide and keep us updated.

it si horses for course, if you want to stay on the same site for weeks on end get a caravan, if you like travelling round, staying a few days and moving on, the MH is the way to go, all you have to do is to ensure you stock up on drink and food before getting to site.

there is no definitive answer, I prefer MH, have had tent, folding tent, folding camper and MH, (missed out on the caravan as could not see the point - on third MH now)

Our new double axle unit has more space than our folding camper!! but the folding camper was a fantastic unit, just not good in the rain or wind for setting up or taking down.

The correct answer is what ever feels right for you

I remember waiting overnight when we had a caravan, on the quayside for the ferry at Cherbourg. It was persisting down & when the time came to start to get ready to embark, there was a trailer tent whos owners battled against the wind & rain to get it closed up. After which came a lot of hand jestering between the 3 of them. It soon became apparant that the car keys couldn't be found. We gave the elderly woman in the party shelter in our 'van & a brew & she was calling her Grandson a few well chosen words. He had left them in some cupboard or other & had to unfold the entire shebang to retrieve them.

In the last 30 odd years I have had 8 caravans ,2 trailer tents and for the last 15months I have had a campervan.

I am just about to sell the campervan (at a big loss) and am buying another caravan.

There are plus and minus for all types of outfit, but for me it has to be a caravan. Campers are ideal if you travel from site to site.

Regards

Robin

We have a very small campervan (Romahome) that has all the facilities, loo, fridge, grill, hob and two beds. It fits into the space of a large car and with a pop up roof could be used as an everyday car, it is turbo diesel and drives like a dream.

When on site we erect a drive away tent awning for extra space but rarely need to use the awning. Twice we have had a problem with height barriers as we have a hi-top but usually no problems.

At the end of the day only you can decide exactly what will suit you best but each choice will be a compromise.

Good luck

I've come from a caravan to MH & now I have just replaced my MH with another caravan, family wise much more room in a caravan, MH costs are high Tax MOT INS SERV & your limited to where you can travel to when parked up, as for towing I've traveled all round europe with my old van, with no isuses, personally I think MH's are great if you do a lot of regular touring, but if you dont you've got an expensive orniment sitting on your drive.
Personal prefernce I agree but I would recommend you try a MH before you buy.

Had a caravan for years, now have a motorhome. As well as the more obvious advantages of the latter, I'd also say we are enjoying using our legs more and exploring the site's immediate area. In the past we'd do the sights in the car, now we do local walks and explore every nook and cranny. Its been great!
Am not saying one is better than the other - its just you can turn disadvantages into advantages with just a different outlook.
