As others have said, keep as far to the left as you can and let the ones behind make there own minds up. Signalling left could and does cause confusion if you are not stopping or turning.

Unless there is a definitive answer we should err on the side of caution.

How about the headlight flashing we do here to let someone know they can pull out in front of us.  But.. on the continent it means 'beware, I'm not stopping' (or thereabouts).  Nearly got ourselves killed about 20 years ago on a road in Luton when a foreign lorry flashed us - then the driver nearly killed us again when he got out of his cab and came over to our little car!

If the signal isn't clear to everyone then it's best not to use it to anyone is my reckoning.

Yes, if you've picked up a tail of traffic you shill shouldn't feel harrasssed into driving faster than you feel confident of doing and should stay within your vehicle's capabilities. I think the HC says something about "balking other traffic unreasonably" but that doesn't mean driving as fast as the driver behind thinks you should! It means pull over to allow faster drivers past when possible and facilitating their overtaking ie by letting them past on the long safe straights rather than trying to speed up there.

I personally would not make any sort of unofficial signals which could be open to misinterpretation. A vehicle close behind might think you were suddenly about to turn left, stand on their brakes and car No3 could go right into them.

The onus of safe overtaking rests entirely on the driver wishing to make that move. If you give any signal not recognised in the H C you may add to his/her confusion. A lot of lorry drivers slow and give the n/s winkers a burn, but I think that is only a courtesy signal. You must not worry if the person behind your vehicle is in a hurry. However, it wouldnt hurt to pull over at the next convenient layby, and let them go. More peaceful that way.

Just to add if the vehicle behind you was'nt trying to mate with your exhaust pipe, if they hung back they would have a perfectly clear view of the road ahead

 Hi Jax365

As a Retired Fire Service Instructor there is no Signal for the front Vehicle

to indicate to the one behind, if they are stuck behind you in a narrow road its tuff!

Its up to them to make the decision to overtake. When there is a build up of Traffic

behind you, pull into a Layby and let them pass. You could call them on with a Hand Signal if you can see that the road is clear in front of you. But again they have to make the Decsion.

Yes, I quite agree, Mick. It's one of the things I learned when I was learning to drive... don't get too close to the car in front, drop back from lorries, or you can't see what's ahead!

Well, that's cleared that up then. I'm not doing anything except pull off into a layby or slow down a bit and pull in to let others pass.

I was wondering whether the best thing would be to wind down the window and do a handsignal to overtake - that seems the best way to make yourself understood.

It's just that some drivers get so impatient that they take huge risks, not only with their own lives, but with everyone else's. I've seen it so many times.
