In your position Sandra, first off I would strip the switch and see if there are wires running both in and out of the switch. If there are wires running out to ?, then perhaps the direction of these wires would give you a general pointer as to where this unit is situated.
Failing that, I would turn on this switch and then check every 12v applience, light etc in the van and then turn off the switch and do the same.
If nothing changes then it is probably a unit that has been installed in the past and is no longer there. IE, 12v TV Aerial Booster, a Motorised Step or a Ventilation Fan in one of the Skylights.
However, until you know 100% just what this switch was for and that it is no longer needed, just switch it off and leave it alone. You never know what will appear 3 months down the road that you never thought of before .
