I've got a 1974 T2 Bay window campervan and yes, the initial outlay was expensive and it's had a few hiccups... but, it's actually worth more than I paid for it if I need to sell it, the van has everything that we need to camp self contained, even with 3 kids... and the engine is a total doddle to get to know as there's very few parts to it... so you can do simple services yourself even if you're totally inexperienced . Size wise, well, the other half uses the van as her daily driver and apart from the occasional multi-storey car park being off limits, has no issues.
The VW scene is great and caters for all sorts, we've made friends and camped eight times this year with another three planned before the end of the season. There are lots of websites, forums and blogs offering support, BUT, it isn't for everyone and we hired one for a weekend before buying one and I would heartily recommend having a really good scout round, seeing if you can try out one or two and not rushing into things.
------------- There are no problems in the world that cannot be resolved by a chat round a fire with a good beer!
