my camping vehicle is a car. The only mod I had done is to have a pop-up roof installed. Not essential but makes life more comfortable. So yes you can use a car as a base vehicle for camping-lots of folk do it especially with the ones like mine-the Doblo, also the Renault Kangoo, and many others.
slept in my car twice a standard almera, once was when on a campsite there was 85mph winds and my tent got trashed, was a rough scary night just cuddling into my sleeping bag, was about 3am i thought having a caravan would be a good idea lol
another was after a weekend racing and I was too tired, was about 2am, got off the motorway into a villiage, found a carpark and went to doss for a few hours just so i could drive home in relative safety
Hey Landie, I'd be interested to know how you are finding the Land Rover. I posted a 'Dilema' post re: camper van, conversion or just plain ol camping today and lots of people have been very helpful.
A Land Rover might be a sensible long term buy for me. I've also found a company that could convert the roof like the old dormobile versions. If I got a LWB it could be a great option.
Just wanted to say hello and find out more. Sounds like you had a great recent trip in yours.
Depends what your after mate. You need to love them in order to put up with their niggles, but we had a fun
Comfortable few nights. I do a good 15,000 miles a year in mine, we just whipped the bed up in an afternoon with some redundant plywood. Drop me a pM
Hi Landie_man - thanks for your reply. I've been up early doing all sorts of research. I was originally thinking one might be what I was looking for - basic transportation for drum kit and use as a camping vehicle, but when I add in the family factor i.e. fitting two child seats and preventing my other half from being bounced to death (she has a back condition where she is supposed to keep moving but not jarring the back), think a L.R. might now not be the answer. Me alone - I'd jump at the chance!
I took a look at the photos on your profile. Looks like a simple and effective idea. 15k p.a. is is a fair no. of miles to cover in one. You must be the first place to call on for day to day living with a Landie.
Thought I'd let you know I'm kinda ruling one out after getting initially very excited about owning one.

Another plus point for the Granvia - such a smooth and comfortable ride it's like being in a hovercraft.

Very true, but the Granvia's out of my price bracket at the moment.
Landie will be very disappointed, but I'm 95% decided on looking to opt for a Mk1 Honda CR-V alongside something like a large OzTent. The most off road I'm going in this vehicle would be moving out of a field in the rain, so it makes sense with the family / drum kit and other uses for it. The campervan will have to wait a while.
