we stayed at the porlock weir carpark , in late october last year, the carpark is owned by the private estate , you pay for the longest time available , which is , i think , 16 hrs , for about a fiver, there are no signs saying you cant overnight camp, and we were left alone,we stayed 2 nights, beautiful views from the carpark , all is spread before you , looking out to sea, to the far left is the weir , and some old cottages , then sea , its a lovely little village ,very small so make sure you take your provisions with you, there are shops in porlock itself , which is a couple of miles back, you'l probably drive through it to get to the weir. the beach is a mass of grey cobbles, which also forms a lot of the local build , unless your desperate dan you wont be running it through your tootsies!
i was expecting a waterfall type weir but a weir is a way to hold back water, in this case two big gates for the small dock area. great pub across the road from your lodgings , lovely beer and good food , they have a fish and chip night ,cant remember which night , probably worth finding out as they say its well attended.
in the car park there are toilets, with all the new metal fitments, couldn't find a source of water to fill the tanks, we managed to get some at the pub , need a long hose, best be filled when you get there.
if you fancy a posh night out there are a couple of fancy restaurants, a craft centre , a posh frock shop, looks like some good walks in the area, unfortunately most of the time we were there it was pouring down , and strong winds , imagine cathy and heathcliff would be right at home there!
thoroughly enjoyed our time there, well worth a visit. around that area also well worth going , brean down or the other way definitely clovelly, and a few miles outside of clovelly , go to the village of woolfordisbury, ask for woolsbury, as there is another one 40 miles away, on the sat nav its woolsbury, they have the best fish and chip shop for miles around. cod is superb, i tend to source the best fish shops , i came from hull as a boy so i know what a good bit of fish is like.. happy hunting,
