We sold our caravan this year privately after 5 years of use.  Never smelt of dog!   I am very fussy about dog smell/hair (hence this post!!).  I think it can be overcome, I always keep the van well ventilated on and after trips, use air freshener etc etc.

I think the worst thing for smells is carpet and upholstery, which is why I have only wood or ceramic flooring at home and cover all my upholstery.  Like someone mentioned - leather is better (like my sofa at home), but we couldn't afford the motorhome with the leather interior.

We have a pop up tent for the dogs to sleep in at night and a piece of plastic covered wire frame (from a garden centre) that we put behind the cab seats. When we stop for a coffee or out for the day we put them in the cab then place the wire frame to stop them getting out when we're in the main part of the MH. They look at us pitifully but we remain firm! One is a labradoodle and like others have said he casts long haired tumbleweed. The little un is a miniature poodle and he doesn't cast at all. I love the doodle but if I'd known they cast so much I would probably have got two poodles.
We haven't lifted the carpets yet but I think we might as we have a nice laminate floor.

I don't care at how careful everybody is with their animals, once inside a camper or caravan, the smell is there for a long time if not for ever, you the owner will not smell it or agree with this statement, but its the truth, i had an old VW T2 Palomino and even after a professional valet service i could still smell the bloody dog from the previous owner. I'M AN ANIMAL LOVER HENCE I HAVEN'T GOT A DOG, because i do not think its fair to take animals along in campervans or caravans,

I agree Feeblecat!!

I would say it's a huge majority that DO have pets with them in their campers/motorhomes/caravans.  We haven't been abroad since 1996 when we got married as we've owned dogs every since and I will not put them in kennels.  What better way to enjoy owning a dog than to take them away all over the UK with you on holiday.

If the Palomino smelt of dog why did you buy it?

You may well agree with one and another, but the statement still stands, i was born on a farm where my old man had all sorts of animals, hence my statement  of being an animal lover, and to all of you that may have dogs or cats, i think and so should you when going on holiday , i have seen some of the so called DOG LOVERS out there leaving their dogs in their campers/ caravans when its scorching hot and in the 90 degrees, and all for the sake of keeping their possessions safe from burglars, hypocrits, it was two weeks ago at a service area by the Millau bridge, the caravan was british and the  poor dog inside was going barking mad either for fresh air,  food or water. And more, some of you won't even pick up what the dog leaves on grass/pavements. I bought the Palomino because it was one of one hundred imported from Canada and after it was cleaned and fully serviced it, it earned me £2.500

To the OP. A good tip for removing hair etc is to wipe upholstery with hand inside a rubber glove. Works very well.

Anyway, I'm off for a week to abuse my dog, hope the poor forecast doesn't happen or I'll be wearing that rubber glove most of the week cleaning off hairs from my cooped up pet!

One of the main reasons for buying our motorhome was so we could take our little dog with us.She is one of the family and wouldn't dream of leaving her at home.

Everybody to their own I say.
