Had a similar problem. Firstly the compartmen that holds the cassette had become smelly due to spillage when the toilet was over full. A thorough clean out cured it. Next the rubber seal became smelly if the flap was not opened fully before the toilet was used. Again a good clean using a sterilizing agent did the trick.
Always make sure the flaps open before you use it....and dont use it till it overflows! You should have a warning light on the flush. And if you dont, just getting 'splashback' on your arse when you use it is a good indicator it wants emptying.
