Don't forget "A plan is only a means of measuring where things all went wrong".

As for a budget I used the same method as my other half when she goes shopping. "Yes dear but it was in a sale":0)

Joking apart & I'm not trying to teach anyone how to suck eggs. I take it you'll be taking photo's of your project from start to finish.

The reason for this is it will help / make life easier with your insurance both at the start & if you need to make a claim.

Also when you want to change your log book from van to "Motorcaravan". Some people don't bother with this but its worth doing Again to make life easier in the long run.

I know I've gone a bit off subject, sorry all.

Not at all Mostin. I came here to seek advice from those who know better than I and I haven't been dissapointed.

I'll enjoy building it just as much as travelling and any advice that I can acquire along the way I will gladly take and apply to my build where appropriate.

We have a LDV Convoy minibus, self-built and re-registered as a Motor caravan.

A priority for us was a relatively cheap conversion, as I was worried about spending thousands and then finding out the vehicle had failed its MOT.

We bought an old caravan as a donor vehicle and used a lot of the cupboard doors, framing for the toilet door etc from that. We meet the criteria, but it is relatively basic - for example we have a 2 ring and grill gas camping stove screwed down to the worktop, with the gas bottle secured underneath.

We have whale marine handpump/taps at the sink and in the toilet area, rather than electric taps.

It works for us and we use it quite a lot, but I'm sure many people would want something fancier.

*Edit - just to add the Convoy is wide enough to get a bed that meets the spec across the way. Many vehicles are not.

I've just been looking at an LDV 17 seater on Gumtree.com!

I think that the key-words in your reply are 'It works' and 'We use it quite a lot'; If you're happy with it and it performs to your expectations, whilst conforming to legal requirements and site rules (if that's where you sometimes park it?) then it has done it's intended job and you will always enjoy your holidays in it. Well done to you.

I am lucky enough to have a caravan breakers within 3 miles from my home and I can envisage lots of trips there!

I intend to use lightweight framing materials / partitions with B&Q type kitchen fascias. A combined 240V / 12V electrical supply, a combined 3 hob burner / sink and then get ourselves off on holiday! :-) Most other things we either already have or can be added to as we're going along.

Yes - we park on sites and have never had any problems. We're Caravan and camping club members and usually book in advance. They often look a bit wary when we first arrive, but have never said anything.

We have a drive away awning, which helps with space as there are 4 of us. Ours is a long wheelbase, high roof which that one on Gumtree must be as well, if it is a 17 seater. Spare seats can be sold on ebay and usually go quite well.

Hi all.

As you say SeanMattews the words "it works and Septic use it quite a lot" are what counts.

After chatting to a few self builders before i started mine the key seems to be knowing what your going too be using it for when it is finished, i.e if your mainly going to use your van on campsites or always eat out then you don't need to kit your van out as much as say someone who goes wild camping & needs everything in the van. I fall more into the 2nd group as i use farm sites/ pub sites or go to see some mates who race. Also we go over to France where they have Aires etc. But like you said "it has to work" for you.

It's also a good way to see if the camper / motorhome type of holiday is for you with out having to sell your kids on ebay to buy one lol.

I signed upto this site www.sbmcc.co.uk for a years membership when I built mine.

It was very helpful & their a nice bunch on there who are keen to help. Plus you can see all sorts of self builds there. I found it well worth it.

Right off to clean my water tanks out as I'm off to the peak district in a couple of days for a long weekend

Hi I hope your van is coming along well, ours is very nearly finished and we have great fun, never been turned away, we used Deep Red website, brilliant help we emailed and thanked him. We had no problem re registering as a motorcaravan sent 9 pictures and got it back two weeks later to go to France, worth doing as speed limits same as a car and not a van, my hubby had to go on a speed awareness course because of van speed limit. We bought greatstuff off ebay and I am so happy with it.
