Well, we hired a Panel Van conversion for a week, and found it much, much too small for a family of four. So a PVC/Campervan is definitely off the list.

We had a week of cold wind and rain, which really showed the impact of being co-ooped up in a smaller size vehicle. So windy, we could not keep the drive-away awning up, which really limited the space we had available.

My short list is now:

Hymer Camp/Swing
CI 656
Mooveo C647
Chausson Welcome 17 - (thanks for the suggestion Karavanner!)
Chausson 22 )thanks Kev84)
Chausson 03 or S3
Auto trail 600s

If anyone has any other suggestions for a minimum 4 berth bunk bed motorhome, do please let me know. Planning to buy SOON! :)

Having bought a caravan and two motorhomes, we have found that the secret is to find your ideal layout first. Visit loads of dealers! The usual mags also have a section with the layout, with a list of vans with that layout.

When you have found the layout you want, look on Autotrader and EBay. The secret is to find the van than fits you, rather than trying to fit the van! There are loads of really good second hand bargains to be had (we have bought and sold them!). Take your time and you will find your gem.

Good luck. I look forward to reading your next instalments!

The next instalment has arrived in the form of an A -Class Hymer motorhome, not with bunk beds, as I originally thought we wanted, but with a rear kitchen layout.
It is a B544 and the layout suits our family's needs just fine.
It has a drop down double over the driver and passenger seats and the dinette converts into a small double. It has a side sofa which makes a single bed and is ideal for lounging during the daytime. Really looking forward to the Spring so that we can get out and about in it!
