I would really recommend they hire one for a week or so.
Fine for 2 people, but with 2 big dogs as well .... on a rainy campsite ...!
As has already been said, a decent amount of mechanical knowledge is a must (unless you have a huge amount of money)
We have just returned from a 2,400 mile, two week trip round Europe. Our son is 17 and nearly 6' tall. This was the last big trip with all 3 of us!

At least it won't devalue, he can sell it after the first trip and get his money back hopefully.
They did one up on 'Wheeler Dealers' it's got a 2 cylinder 48bhp engine. he'll soon get fed up with that.

If you love old Vdubs enough to get to know them and understand them inside out then you will know there is no reason why you connot drive them to the ends of the earth and plenty have. For the rest... 'Its a VW thing, you would'nt understand'.
