I have a 2.2 non-turbo Transit engined van. It certainly doesn't have problems going up hills. I'd get it serviced by a competent diesel mechanic.

You could always go to a dealer and try a test drive in a similar van and see how it performs.

I almost exchanged my Trigano Tribute for an Autosleeper Executive with a 2 litre lump, took it for a drive, comeback to the showroom and told the salesmen NO DEAL, autosleepers momocoque are quite heavy bodies, and the the 2 litre lump was just not good enough for me, i now have an IH TIO R with a 3 litre lump and i will not move off the third lane if anyone flashes at my rear(unless they are cops) end i just put my foot down and leave them wondering Lol

Jaynezs, We have an older Ducato 2.5 diesel m/h. It is NON TURBO and it is underpowered on hills, down the gears and down to 20 mph in places..
Live life in the slow lane watching the rest champing at the bit, desperate to get there a few minutes sooner.
You could always spend another £00000 to buy a more modern unit, as other contributors have advised, but there's a lot of 'one-upmanship'.. Got to have the brightest, best, most expensive etc..
Enjoy your old motorhome and accept that it's a big heavy unit. If it was Turbo you would use twice as much diesel (in an older engine).. New turbo diesel is much more powerful and economical, but if you are like us and don't have a spare £30,000 or more - enjoy waving them all bye as they go tearing up hills.
As for suggestion to 'remap' I expect something as old as that is basically a tractor engine with no electronic management system to remap..Our is....LOL.

Yep, I'd agree with the "it is what it is, enjoy it as such" approach..

Obviously, get it double checked over by someone who knows what they are doing..but if it did only have 87hp(when new!), that isn't much for a 6mtr(ish?), over-cabbed MH, so it's never going to be a ball of fire anyway.

Our little Hiace Powervan ("Power"!? Ha! they must've lost something in translation ?),only has(had!?) that sort of output and at 212,000 miles, when loaded that can dawdle up some hills..especially those that don't give you much of a "run up"

I use to have a 2.8 non turbo hiace camper, much smaller than your van but just like yours it was totally gutless. As stated above you just need to learn to take it easy and dont expect to much from it. Having it serviced will make no differance

I hit the bottom of a hill near Louth last week at 55mph, managed every shift(column change - double clutch) perfectly, and still crested at 22mph according to my GPS speedo.. Like you said 87hp when new, 3400kg, 105 000 km on clock, can't really expect much more.
We love our clunky, noisy, rattly old Knaus Traveller.. One day, when we win the l*ttery we might buy one with a turbo, but as we are still committed to work for a few years we have learned to enjoy the scenery and avoid the crazies who need to be doing 70mph everywhere.. (what's uk speed limit for a motorhome)?

It depends on the vehicle's unladen weight..

I think it's something like under 3.1 ton it's still "car" limits but if it's over, it's 50mph on single carriageway and 60mph on dual carriageways(but still 70mph on MWs)

Thanks for all your replies. I have had it serviced and the guy told me one of the filters was so rusty it disintegrated in his hands, so was definitely in need of some loving care.
