Are you securing your pets for your own sake or your dogs safety? A cage may keep them out of your way but if it isn't bolted down it becomes a missile that will possibly kill them and you.

In my car I drop half of the rear seat down and put the cage up against the back of the driver's seat. The top of the cage is lower than the top of the front seat, as we only have a small terrier. As an added precaution I have a strap fixing the cage to the luggage hold-down points in the back of the car, to stop the cage from rising. The cage can't move sideways because it is sandwiched between the other rear-seat back and the side of the car. It is quite a snug fit.

If we were involved in an accident where the impact was large enough to dislodge the cage, I doubt any of us would survive.

There is no law requiring dogs to be restrained in the vehicle in France,the only law is that nothing be allowed to interfere with the drivers vision or ability to control the vehicle.

Because of your reply I made contact with a friend who lives in France and he in turn spoke to the head of his regions Gendarmerie, and in basis Saxo1 you are correct.

However my friend stated he did say the following: - Joel looked everything up to make sure that the info he was giving was correct and up to date. And the good news is that there is very little legislation concerning the transportation of pets in cars / campers (as opposed to transporting farm animals). In short, your dogs must be carried in such a way that they cannot come in contact with the driver or the drivers seat / controls. Nor must they be allowed to travel with their heads out of the window.

Hopefully this will clear this matter up.
