People spend large amounts of money so that they can enjoy their dream of touring about the country and having that freedom to park up where they want. Many will use the occasional site for emptying waste and refilling water tanks; many will buy some local produce or eat out and many will be respectful about dealing with their rubbish.
Then we have the inconsiderate motor-homers; the “I want and I’m going to do what I like and I don’t care about anyone else” type. Just as in other walks of life nowadays, respect, basic common sense and courtesy is rapidly disappearing. Taking local examples: look at the motor-home owner who dumped the contents of his cassette toilet in a local beauty spot used by all; the motor-home owner who decided to occupy two disabled spaces in front of our pharmacy overnight and refused to move because he was having his breakfast; the motor-home owner who spent three nights parked up in front of a house so close that one wheelchair user couldn’t get out of his home and also had all his natural light blocked in the downstairs rooms and then there’s the ******* who decided to dump his effluent down a drain in front of a local’s house. Unfortunately, this was not a sewer and it cost hundreds of thousand £££ because it damaged the town’s water system – guess who are paying for sorting the damage! Given that, does anyone wonder why motor-homers in general are given a bad name, even the decent ones?
To those who say we should be providing space like the French Aires – such facilities have to be paid for, probably why some communities are now charging for them as has been mentioned. We have far less space in places people want to be in the UK, so do local communities go for essentials like housing locals or forking out for free facilities for those who are unwilling to pay or don’t give a damn about the people and places they’re visiting?
We’ve always had a lot of motor-homes visit and they’re very welcome. RET has made us more affordable to get to and, sadly, that’s meant an increase in the not so savvy brigade. We have visitors who’ve been coming here regularly who are not coming back because of them; we can’t afford to lose these people and it’s not just campsites losing out when this happens, it’s local businesses and ultimately the whole island.
So, sorry, no, good luck to Exmouth and to the decent motor-home community, please, please try and educate the ones who are giving you an unjustified bad name. And thank you for being the decent people you are.
