I purchased a. New Motorhome in Germany 5 years ago much higher specification than U.K. in build and engine as standard. No VAT in Germany you pay in the UK. Headlights are fully adjustable to U.K. I changed the mileometer face to show miles and kilometres and swopped the fog light and reversing light position .
Hi. Just returned from Germany. Found the van we wanted (and can afford)from a great choice of vans. Pick up on the 12th Dec. On with the work now. Thanks again for your help.
Hello.
I have a quick question if you don't mind. Are you aloud to use your vehicle in the UK before it is registered. With regards to insurance this seems to be an issue. Many thanks.
The German export plates cover a period of 30 days and will give you 3rd party cover. Clearly, on an expensive vehicle this is not sufficient and so I found a UK insurance co. that would insure it based on the Vin number, from the day I collected the van in Germany.
I have been told today that I will only be insured when I arrive in the UK and only for the purpose of getting the vehicle mot'd which I must do immediately. I must then store the vehicle until it is UK registered.
Going back 20yrs. I bought a used VW T25 camper in Holland. Different situation because Dutch plates stayed on until I go home. UK insurer agreed to insure it on the chassis number from the moment I collected in Holland until home but after that I could only drive on Dutch plates in UK to get it Mot’ed & register on UK plates then inform insurance of new UK number which was age related to van ie F plate for 1988.
In those days you could get it Mot’ed with taped up headlamps so only thing I had to do was put a rear fog lamp on UK side then get Mot. After that I sent paperwork off & got UK number back in a few days & it was on the road.
Suggest op phones insurer in office hours & asks call centre operative to put them through to somebody more senior who might better understand his requirements.
Another way if he knows anybody in the trade is to borrow a set of UK trade plates. Obviously check insurance cover but I do know that UK trade plates are legal to collect vehicle in Europe to drive direct to UK destination for delivery purpose only.
