The reverse polarity issue has largely been dealt with by fitting double pole breakers in UK caravans. Houses etc still use single pole.
DP breakers mean that the fault is fully isolated. The EU just don't bother with polarity and always use DP.
We still have one small problem which is we use 13 Amp plugs and sockets and these have a fuse and switch in the live only. So if you isolate a piece of equipment by switching the socket off, the isolation and fuse will isolate either the live or the neutral depending upon the polarity of the supply. Of course if the breaker trips both will be isolated.
It's vital to unplug if you want to work on something and not rely upon the switch.
