I have had small vans, but felt that even with jus the two of us and a little dog, they were too small. The biggest thought in my mind was what happens on a nasty wet day where we just don't want to go out. I now have a 5 berth Fiat Ducato Autoquest. 18ft long, so no monster. We do have a toilet. We do have room to spread out if we are staying in. We do have an oven and hob so can cook properly. I paid £7000 with a brand new no advisory MOT. What I need is power steering to ease my arthritis. That is a £600 conversion and will be going in today. The other thing will be solar panels and bigger leisure battery to keep the lights and tv on during long evenings.
I Don't know where you are in the country but there are a few on Marketplace now.
I spent a long time going through them over and over, making little notes on engines, condition, mileage, and MOT histories. All over the country, but I ended up buying from a man just half a mile from me.
You can't know what you want until you see what is out there, so study everything from layout to MOT history. You can even run the numbers through the Go Compare sites for insurance. Look at everything from your armchair, and you will find what you think suits your needs before travelling all over. Good luck

It's by no means impossible to pick up a serviceable campervan or motorhome for under £10k. It will probably have high mileage and have a low Euro rating, so places you can visit may well be restricted.

The equipment - heater, fridge, hob etc may all now be obsolete and spares hard to find. However, actual vehicle spares should be OK. I would avoid older vans without power steering eg older Talbots which are also woefully under-powered.

Insurance is usually relatively cheap. At under £180 fully comp and protected NCD, my van costs less to insure than my wife's modest VW Polo.

many thanks for taking the time to reply. you have given me great advice and lots to ponder. We arent in any rush to buy as we want to see over the next few months what is out there for our price range and what would suit us best. we are leaning towards a campervan with toilet, seen a couple of Renault Masters which although have high mileage , around 145,000 , they look big enough for what we need. we are just wanting to stay in the uk but not always on sites. this is just the start of adventure and im sure we will get it right, thats again for the advice.

I started out with a Bedford CF campervan in the 1980's and have owned a number of motorhomes (generally under 6 mtrs) before buying our current van. Although small, it's the best one that we've had.

Although only 5 mtrs. long, it's fully equipped with a washroom, full cooker and fridge. It's easy to park and drives like a big car. The point is, it comes down to the layout, not the length.

Unfortunately for anyone wanting to buy one, they're rare as hens' teeth.

Thanks for that SGThomas.. It's rare to find so many for sale at once.
The first of those vans(same age and model as mine) has almost twice the mileage of my van, but is £4k more than I payed for my van 8 years ago! Not a bad investment?
