I get it. But when it was linked to van starter battery it drained that battery after 3 days. That why I switched it to leisure battery. Then at least the van would start. But I get your point as when it was connected to van battery it wasn't through the ignition. Probably was a constant live. But I thought the screen in the cab would have to be switched on in order to send wireless signal to camera in rear of van. But the screen is plugged in to the cigar lighter socket. That only turns the screen off but the camera has its own feed at rear of van which is fed from leisure battery. But this post has helped me. It needs to be on ignition or reverse light circuit.

Yes that's it in a nutshell, the camera should only be live when the ignition is turned on. That way it can't drain any battery when the vehicle is stationary with the engine off.

I should have thought of that. I think I might try the ignition set up. Preferably if I can do it from a fuse in fuse box. As the other option is the reverse light. Which is a night mare as the wires are on a multi plug so makes it a lot more difficult to locate correct circuit. Oh the old days when you could snap on a scotch lock to a wire and your good to go 🙄

I spoke to my son who is a heavy goods driver and he said the IR lamp on the reversing camera of his truck glows whenever the ignition is turned on. It is therefore connected to the ignition circuit, not the reversing light circuit.

Thinking back to when I was looking at reversing cameras, the feed from the reversing lights was only a trigger signal source to switch on the camera, NOT a power feed, that came from elsewhere, at least on the systems I looked at!

You don't say what your vehicle is, but with modern Canbus wiring, it's a lot more difficult to find power sources for accessories! Ultimately you do need an ignition controlled source, but finding one that can provide the POWER without causing problems for the wiring/computerised management may be easier said than done!

The alternative is to just put a power on/off switch to the camera from a battery feed, and turn it off when not needed.

No help to you I know, but the hassle of finding and accessing the correct wiring is what drove me away from a hard wired camera, and to a self contained battery powered one!
