This sounds great in theory, we had the same idea when we bought our 1981 Beddy but we soon found out that these old vans guzzle LOADS of petrol, which costs loads of cash, cheaper to stay in a hotel, or stay very local ( we've been away every weekend for 8 months but always within a 60 mile radius!) Good Luck whatever you decide to do, but wrap up warm.

A question for Briar Rose please-at risk of going a bit off topic. The Link you provided for DataCard: don't you require Mobile phone use for this and wouldnt it turn out an expensive way of downloading? Is the price quoted (£20) per month?

It sounds to me like you need a good holiday, time to reflect and regroup.  Like everyone else I feel concern for you doing this in the winter.  Have you considered just taking an extended holiday first, say in Spain for the winter.  As suggested you could probably pick up work if the money is scarse but there is some cheap accomodation to be had in long winter lets.  It would give you space to think and plan a springtime expedition.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

So much good info and concern from total strangers. I can see that I'm am going to enjoy the company on the road. Whilst under a cloud at the moment I am trying to see the sunshine beyond. Rest assured, I will bide my time.No rush decision or leaving in the middle of the night. I am a great one for researching. Or is that an excuse to go on the computer.Still reading about vans, although I did stop to look at one whilst out delivering in Cleethorpes the other day.

The money is a concern and burning all my bridges. Before a complete disappearing act, I will try a couple of weekends away. That in its self will be good for completing my research. I have a good job and marvellous boss, I'm fairly sure that I will be able to walk back in again at some stage should the need arise. My savings will in theory allow for "one year on the road". That sounds like a book title. For the film I thing some one suave and sophisticated like myself. Maybe Sean connery will be available. On the other hand maybe I better get the trip done before the auditions are necessary. Many thanks so far.
