i think Wilfers means the engine sounds very noisy, when 'ticking' over when he takes the cover off....... and not driving with the cover off

You are indeed very right nannycatch. The RAC man thought the exhaust had fallen off as the noise was that loud. Me thinks there may be a problem. Oh well, it's only money i suppose.....

Our 1600 td is pretty loud.  I don't really notice it once the stereo's playing, until I stop at traffic lights and suddenly can't hear anything because of the music.  Does get to 60 ok, but we do use the gears alot on hills.  Just like Nannycatch said - speed up when you see one coming.

Hi Hammy

Yet another t25 owner here!

I notice you're in Ireland.  In that case you'd be very welcome to join www.type2ireland.org Ireland's friendliest vw camper community.

We look forward to seeing you there, and if you need anyone to check this van over for you there are many who would offer their time and expertise ;)

100acrewood, what is the performance like on your wedge? Is the engine particularly slow? We have a 1.6TD and it really does struggle to get up to 60mph and when the cover is off, you have to shout over the noise of the engine. Is this normal? Our mechanic thinks there is something wrong and we need a re-con engine.

Hi Wilfers 100acres OH here I drive the van every day so Im going to answer your question - I don't have any problems getting up to speed in the van but I have yet to drive it fully loaded, with just me and passanger and enpty cupboards it goes like the clappers to be honest, sometimes it comes as a shock to other road users who try to overtake cos they think Im a slow van.  But I just like to cruise along most of the time.  when you say cover do you mean engine cover or bed cushion, when my cushion is off you can tell there's an increase in noise, I put the cushion back on last night and this morning coming to work was a quieter affair .

We bought the van off a VW enthusiast who had been looking for that all important engine for the old van - which was being changed from a 1600 to a 2ltr - thats what caused the problem not a like for like swop - anyway he checked it all out before hand and gave it a seal of approval and hopefully as long as we keep up with those oil changes we should be ok.

The engine cover. Anyway, it's in the garage now, hopefully it'll be mended by next week as we are supposed to be going away in it over easter. I did nearly get it up to 70 today but that was on the flat and any slight incline and I have to go done the gears. Our mechanic is pretty clued up and he's not a rip off merchant so should be able to sort it for us. I'm not expecting a superfast van but I'm sure it shouldn't be as noisy or as slow as it is. Apart from that, it's fantastic...

Hi everyone,

I have learnt very quickly on which suppliers to use for type 2 T3 ("Type 25") bits and they are the following:-

Just Kampers (for the easy to get bits)
VW Classicparts - www.vw-classicparts.de (for the harder to get bits)
Bus Depot - www.busdepot.com (for the very hard to get bits)
GSF Car Parts (alternative supplier, not suitable 2.0 litre aircooled models)
Mega Bug (second hand parts if all else fails)

I hope this helps :)
