You are indeed very right nannycatch. The RAC man thought the exhaust had fallen off as the noise was that loud. Me thinks there may be a problem. Oh well, it's only money i suppose.....

100acrewood, what is the performance like on your wedge? Is the engine particularly slow? We have a 1.6TD and it really does struggle to get up to 60mph and when the cover is off, you have to shout over the noise of the engine. Is this normal? Hi Wilfers 100acres OH here I drive the van every day so Im going to answer your question - I don't have any problems getting up to speed in the van but I have yet to drive it fully loaded, with just me and passanger and enpty cupboards it goes like the clappers to be honest, sometimes it comes as a shock to other road users who try to overtake cos they think Im a slow van.  But I just like to cruise along most of the time.  when you say cover do you mean engine cover or bed cushion, when my cushion is off you can tell there's an increase in noise, I put the cushion back on last night and this morning coming to work was a quieter affair .

We bought the van off a VW enthusiast who had been looking for that all important engine for the old van - which was being changed from a 1600 to a 2ltr - thats what caused the problem not a like for like swop - anyway he checked it all out before hand and gave it a seal of approval and hopefully as long as we keep up with those oil changes we should be ok.
