I thought that the item under discussion was a normal 4 way extension type lead.

This is the same type of kit used by most tenters, just has a blue plug fitted instead of the 3 pin type & a longer cable (easily replaced).

I am at a loss to see how powering up an extension lead can make the van live ???

Surely the point of having an extension on mains 230V is that you have live power at the sockets and should have an RCCB in the lead

I am at a loss to see how powering up an extension lead can make the van live ???

Well it happened in France i plugged in to the mains as normal but some how the the wiring had been reversed and the rdb/d wasnt on the positive side plus the earth was live.Which is attached to the chasis of the van from the fuse box.

It was ok until i stepped out holding onto the camper i made the circuit to ground good job i had shoes on with a rubber sole, the camper being isolated by the tyres,

The Rcb/d never tripped.

I reckon i would have had a real belt (electricians term ) if i hadnt had shoes on.

I always check the supply with one of those LED gadgets that cost a few quid.

An extension lead is ok at home it has a circuit breaker in the house electrics which will trip.

Never presume anything

Pete

From runforestrun's post

Well ive had a good nose around and it really is just a 4 way extension lead, with a standard square 3 pin plug sitting in the engine bay.. waiting to be pluged in.

I may have it wrong, but this to me is a std extension lead, which is not connected to the van electrically in any way. It is just a plain 4 way extension lead which has been screwed to the inside of the van. How can powering this up make his van live ?

Many tenters use this type of lead with a blue plug on instead of the 3 pin plug as I stated, if you want to put an rcd in line then fine, you can get a 4 way with one incorporated these days.

It makes the sockets live that's enough to take care !!

Many tenters in damp conditions would be very foolish not to buy proper hook ups with RCCB/ RCB fitted.

Like this:

Awning/Tent Mains Kit (3 Outlet)

£54.43
£63.95 inc VAT

Awning/Tent Mains Kit (3 Outlet)
M195
For outdoor use. Complies to BS6500 and BS4343 standards. Contains 3 way 13 amp socket, distribution box with transparent window, 10amp twin pole circuit breaker, 20mtr cable at 25 amp cable and 240 volt plug.Complete with two clips on rear to fasten to tent/trailer tent pole.

That's the one John !!!

That would be a fine direct replacement for what Runforestrun has now, without having to do a major installation & chop holes in the van.

I wouldnt fancy having the lead coiled up in the engine bay though, maybe just leave it coiled up under the seat & pass it out of the door when required.
