Just to confirm Chris, the appliance that works while you have the mains plugged in, which stops when you disconnect the mains. Is it a 12V appliance plugged into the 12V socket? 

Often vans have a 240V socket which will only work when plugged into the mains. I also have a 240V light in mine. Again, it will only work when on EHU.

Sorry if this sounds obvious to you, but it's often the simple things which get overlooked, especially when trying to do remote diagnostics.

TBH I had started to wonder whether I simply cannot use the plug sockets without being attached to the mains - I would have expected to find this in the manual (which I now have - but maybe I missed it)...

Generally there is one 12V socket.  What appliance did you plug in and what is the voltage?  Does the socket you plugged into look like a normal household socket or is it a two pin plug?

Oh dear - I don't think you CAN be too obvious with me! It looks like I've had a big misunderstanding of how the plugs work: my assumption was that the mains sockets would still be running when on a leisure battery, but would only have a limited output (for things like the phone charger I was testing with). I honestly didn't realise it was on a completely separate circuit going to  that one plug - d'oh!

Oh well, at least that's another issue ticked off and more knowledge learnt - thanks again for your help!

I thought that might be your problem with the socket, that's why I asked what appliance you were plugging in.  I doubt you're the first to make that assumption and I doubt you'll be the last.

Don't worry about asking what may seem a dibby question on here, as John said, we all started somewhere and you learn as you go along.
