Couldn't agree more about the high cost of M/homes.
I wanted a Dormobile 10,000 years ago, couldn't afford one so I built my own. I recently went into a Shiny Showroom with Mrs Bonzo and she was very taken with some unit costing £64k. It was a lovely thing except for the table that fell off while we were in it - LOL. I asked the salesman where the leisure battery was and he replied that yes, it did have a leisure battery. I repeated my question and he grudgingly showed me a 1X115A leisure battery. How they expected to power all the Do-Dads that thing had on it I don't know.
My latest Transit is just coming up for 300k miles. Fitting it out has cost me about £700. Most of the goodies have come from Skip-Licking and from the Tip. I bought an Antares Inverter for £100 and found an Antares split charger unit on a wrecked Ambulance. The solar panels were bought as part of a Factory closing down sale. The batteries did cost me money, 2x170A Varta tractions don't come cheap. The Microwave was .99p off Ebay. The stove and grill was made out of three broken ones. The one that nearly did me in was buying the foam for the bed; that was mind-numbingly expensive. the windows came out of a scrapper Transit. I used concrete flooring insulation sheets 25 of them for a Tenner. I lined the van inside using T&G and now it looks like a Sauna inside - LOL
So, yes it can be done very cheaply and if you ever unfortunate to see an A Class Motorhome go thru a smash you'll be jolly glad that you had a bit if metal around you
