In reality, despite horror stories most people do not get attacked and most people do not attack others so I think you need to chill and have a bit of faith. I imagine you would be more likely to meet danger crossing the road than sleeping in your campervan, unless of course you have one of those 70grand jobs and your diamonds on display. I have seen motorhomes with garages for the 4x4 in back and adorned with satellites, these are probably far more attractive to attackers than the average trundler carrying items of (relatively) little value to others.
Enjoy the freedom

I am looking for a small camper van to go lone camping in, am getting tired of struggling with the tent, and want to sleep off the ground. lol.
I can only drive an automatic though. Do the Bedford do an automatic, I don't think the Romahome does.
Would love an all girls met if I ever get a van.
Might leave till next spring now though.
Hi Snowbird! I wanted an auto, but couldn't get one within my price range, so I had to learn the gears again. Not possible if you didn't take your driving test in a geared car.
The only vans I've seen with auto were Mazda Bongos and Ford Transits. Have a look on Ebay/Fish 4, etc, just to see - go to campervans then type auto into the search, it should give you a good idea of what's available.
With some vans, if they're not too old (mine is) it's possible to get a garage to change it to an auto for you. I was thinking of buying a Nissan pop-top camper for a while and the garage said they would 'probably' be able to change the transmission to auto. They can't do it with the van I eventually bought (D reg Bedford Rascal) as there isn't anything available.
We were looking for a Romahome for my wife to use as an everyday car - primarily for her and the dog (agility & flyball competitions) and for occasional weekends away for us. Seemed a good idea till I tried squeezing my 6'2" frame behind the wheel of one(Citroen C15),there was no way I could drive any distance in it. We thought the accommodation a bit claustrophobic too. We changed our sights and bought a VW T4 (Autosleeper Trident) and are delighted with our purchase - my wife never wants to drive anything else. She used to drive a Ford Ka and found my VW Passat too big to be comfortable driving it!
As well as our touring caravan we bought a Vauxhall Elddis Nipper, it is very similar to the Bedford Bambi and we love it. They may look small but are like a tardis inside. I use mine as an every day vehicle and usually put £20 a week petrol in it. I drove to Staffordshire in her and put around £35 petrol in to travel from Cumbria. Its a K reg and we got her for £2350. The insurance have told us she is worth over £4000 so we got a bargain. You will be fine camping alone, there are friendly folk around too!!
------------- Jan:Braids Gretna, Feb Stanwix Park Silloth & Braids Gretna,
Than you blondieandi I'm sure your'e right about the camping. I made contact with a lone female Romahomer who loved her van and went all over the place in it. I went to a couple of dealers places today but didn't see anything other than enormous camper vans as big as houses and costing more than my mortgage was 20 years ago. I'll have a look at the Elddis Nipper as it's new to me.
Well happy romahomers, I've done it, I've bought a 1988, many times pre-loved Romahome C15, 1.8 diesel. I got it from Cleveland motor homes where we bought a big van a few years ago to do a long continental tour so I kind of trust them. My little van has been sitting in a back lot for a year so needs some tlc but having got the engine started with no bother ,I took it for a liitle drive and it felt good. It has the usual rusty bits on one wing ,the other has been replaced and needs attention elsewhere. I'm happy with it and the dealers will do the usual MOT and service, valeting etc and have given me a few months warranty as well.
Lovely! Sounds like you have a good deal! Take it out for a day's spin while it's under warranty. I only got a month's warranty on my car, but in that time it went back twice - once for wheel bearings, then for something else I can't remember! Garages tend not to run vehicles for long enough to see if there are any problems, particularly after the engine has heated up.
Congrats.... bet you'll enjoy it..... now when is that meet!! not too soon I hope I'm supposed to get the keys for the house next week mind you date has already changed four times.
Congratulations on your van, uk campsites do a lot of meets all over the country so if you dont fancy being on your own you could try one of them, lots of people on their own go, see link below.
I've just sent off the Roma club application form so I'll get the dates of the 'meets'' in due course. When I collect my van on the 16th then I'm going to do an overnight camp with a friend before the sites close down for the winter. I should detect any faults then. As you suggest Jax I'll make sure I get some work done under warranty if it's needed. I'm really excited about the possibilities for the next season and I look forward to meeting some of you nice people next year. Thank you for your support.
May I wish you all the best of luck with your Romahome. I am about to get one myself, it is also a first motorhome for me and is a 1988 C15 Hytop. It has been purchased off Ebay by a relative of mine who is a bit of an expert on that website, I am really hoping he has chosen wisely. The price seems amazingly good, this worries me slightly because I am very 'strapped' financially and cannot afford to spend lots on repairs, wish me luck! My plan is to use this vehicle for my regular trips to Switzerland, up to now I have been making most journeys on my motorbike but it is really tough in the colder months and I can make an overnight stop in the Romahome which should make things easier.
