Yes we do know it may well be illegal for French drivers in French motorhomes to tow a car on an A-frame in France (although we did see such a combination in June 2017, as I said above). But we have UK motorhome friends who have also toured France in 2017 using an A-frame to tow their Smart car - again no problems on extensive touring. So it seems that currently the Gendarmes aren't interested in stopping UK rigs like these (we also had no problems in Belgium and Holland in recent years). Just wish I could hear any confirmation of UK people doing this in Germany recently.

Because you have been luck enough not to be stopped don't make it legal........my understanding is that it is not legal to tow with an A frame in France and there are plenty of instances where vehicles have been stopped and made to drive separately.

There ia an EU law that states any vehicle that is legal in it's own EU country is legal to drive in any other EU country. Great potential for grey areas though because individual countries also have their own laws.

As pointed out earlier one needs to be able to argue the case if necessary beside the road with the cop that stops you & probably in his own language. If the cop is wrong or the law is unclear is neither here nor there because the incovenience & fine at the time will all be yours. If you think the cop is wrong then you are free to appeal, I guess by filling in forms in the language of the country you are in.

No amount of discussion on a forum will change that.

A-frames do not fall within the Vienna Convention which you talk about according to the C&MC and the C&CC .
And the use of an A -frame and an adapted car in the UK is a grey area which is yet to be challenged in a court of law so neither legal or illegal .
