For what it's worth, here are my experiences dealing with NIG through Adrian Flux.

My van was broken into one weekend, the passanger door lock hacked out, and the radio stolen. I promptly rang the police and called Adrian Flux the next morning, and was then passed onto NIG.

NIG quickly referred me to a local bodyshop to get the lock fixed. However, when I turned up at the bodyshop with the van, it turned out that NIG wouldn't authorise them to do anything. When I rang them up, it turned out that NIG hadn't entered my recent change of address details into their system (which they received a week earlier). They blamed Adrian Flux for this. So the next morning (Flux were shut by that time) I rang Adrian Flux, and they insist the change of address details had been passed on. They contact NIG. NIG suddenly have my details and authorise the repair.

Tuesday morning, NIG say their engineer will inspect the damage on Thursday. Thursday: he doesn't turn up at the bodyshop. Bodyshop hope he will be in on Friday. Friday... guess what? No show. I ring NIG: NIG fob me off with excuse about some change-over in the engineering department and say a new date will be arranged the following Monday. Next Tuesday (a week after the claim) the engineer finally shows up. Meanwhile, my van has been in storage at the body shop (no lock, remember?), and NIG refuse to give me a courtesy car, because they will only offer me one "for the duration of the repair", despite the fact that I had been without my vehicle for a week. Bodyshop do the work nice and quick (Wednesday) and I pick up the van on Thursday. Meanwhile, I have received a new cover note from NIG which STILL has my wrong address on it! Ring them up. New one in the post.

But what about the radio? When I made the claim, I was told I would be contacted by their radio suppliers to arrange fitting a new one. 9 days later I had heard nothing. So I rang NIG up, and, guess what, they hadn't contacted them. So another series of needless phonecalls ensues to sort out what should have been done by NIG in the first place.

The point of this post? Well, I won't be using NIG again. It was the cheapest policy, but unfortunately you don't realise why it's so cheap until you have to claim. I was very disappointed with their customer service, and especially their assurance of a courtesy car which never materialised. The cheapest ain't necessarily the best!

(By the way, I agree the Adrian Flux staff are great. My gripe is only with NIG, the underwriters).

Hi Jan,

We are insured with NIG through Motorcaravanwise, as you know what happened to my van and the yob did a runner from the vehicle. I had to claim off my own insurance NIG and I was sorted out within a month.

So they are not as bad as people make them out.

Tony.

Glad you had a positive experience of NIG, Jan. Hopefully my problems were just a one-off.

Hi Epavelin,

sorry to read about your experience with NIG. I know that we had to make a few phone calls to chase them up, and a bit of bartering with the engineer that was handling my claim. It all worked out ok, apart from the fact that I have lost my no claim bonus as I had to claim off my own insurer, and was missing my £100  excess when I got paid out. I am getting a bit nervous on how much this years insurance will cost me.

Tony.

Bad luck about the way NIG handled your claim.  re: the subsequent post where somebody had their van stolen and NIG were OK about processing that claim - that is my experience with insurance companies.  They will pay out quite happily for stolen vehicles, but really are a pain the in **** for theft damaged vehicles.  They make it as difficult as possible for you to get yor property back into the condition it was pre-crime.  Their engineers have to validate the garage's estimate, they delay unnecessarily, because they are trying ot save money and it is only you who is put out.  Well tough on us, they already have our premiums.

I had a car stolen a few years ago and had paid more than the lowest insurance quote to go with a well known insurer - Norwich Union.  The way they mishandled my claim and then (even though I was not at fault) tried to put my insurance up by an additional 200% made me look elsewhere.

I am currently looking for the best value (note: not necessarily lowest price) insurance for a Diesel 1995 Mazda Bongo for use in the UK and Europe and want breakdown cover.  It will also be my daily driver and is worth approx £6.5k (give or take a thousand).  Will be doing approx. 10,000 per an num.  Two drivers, one over 40 one nearing 40. ( :) ).  Any recommendations?

cheers.

FYI - I went with Lifesure. Good deal, including unlimited use on the continent built into the price.
