Hello 'Pepe63'

How are you? Sorry I haven't replied. I assumed everyone moved on lol! The van is still here, altough trying to keep it dry in this ghastly weather has been a bit of a nightmare! The company (Beefeater) used its insurance (Willis). They admitted fault and paid £5000. I am now in the process of looking for another camper (with shower/toilet) and I'm off travelling in the EU! My one might be sold on Monday for £1500! Everything has worked out for the best, despite my worrying! I can't thank you enough for all your help and advice and regarding this and no doubt we will keep in touch.

Damian

Well glad it worked out ok. As pointed out earlier you will be better going for a van conversion in that price range. While a coachbuilt might be tempting for the extra space, you run the risk of it being as damp the one you just got rid of unless you get it properly damp checked.

Oh, an excellent result!(considering how it was looking at one stage)

Having now sold the 7mtr, "bells'n'whistles encrusted" motorhome , we're now having fun concentration on using our basic Hiace "camping/festival-van"(no loo or shower....it's back to a bucket and wet wipes!)

Safe travels mate!

Travelling the EU and living in the van, A van conversion won't really be suitable at Michell8 so I'm looking for a coachbuild ready to go and I've bookmarked a few. It won't be long now before I find one suitable.

at pepe63, Thank you bud. Feeling apprehensive now I am leaving on the 30th April and still need to sell everything in the flat and buy a replacement motor! lol.. Bucket and wet wipes... Ooh sounds interesting! A frantic look out for bushes and greenery comes to mind! lol... Still plenty of campsites around for all your essential needs when travelling. :)

Take care :)

Look for a German built van then like a Hymer, plenty of those about, mostly left hand drive imports but body work is better built than similar UK built vans so less likely to be damp. This one for example & quite near you. Or this one looks better. Dunno how much it will go for but these German vans are your best bet if you want a coachbuilt.

**HELP!**

To all that have helped me thus far. Thank you so much. The reason for this reply is that I am about to make the biggest purchase of my entire life and I NEED ADVICE from someone who has done this before!

I am about to buy this motorhome. I have seen it and everything works, no sign of any damp and it is perfect! Possible MH

Is is £500 out of my budget and I still need to sell the van I have!

I need someone's advice to let me know if it is worth it and what I should do! I have told them I will give them a decision by tomorrow at midday due to them unable to take the post off eBay within 24 hours (eBay rules).

For one last time... advice?

Thank you so much.

Damian

Its petrol so fuel consumption will be far worse that diesel & if you want to tour on the continent it will cost you even more because while most European countries have petrol at UK price their lower taxed diesel is around 20p/litre cheaper, ie in France diesel is about £1.10p/litre.

I would think you will be lucky to see 15mpg from that whereas a diesel should do 30mpg at least. If its as good as you say it is then maybe worth a punt but work out your fuel costs first.

Hi..

A 2ltr petrol, of mid-'80s vintage..and pulling  something along that big/heavy..?

Personally, it wouldn't be my choice...

I had a similar aged,  2ltr petrol Talbot Express van(self-built camper) back in the early/mid '90s ..and although it could shift..it could also drink juice like it was going out of fashion(and that was only a lightweight van).It also had a lousy gear change(as they were originally intended to be column change, as in LHD form)...

For touring the continent, I would be looking at something more akin to those in the links that michell8 posted (LHD Hymers / German built vans  etc)

Also ,boring I know but you need to be aware of  the GVW,  the axle limits and it's usable payload!

That looks a big old, heavily built( timber framed)van.... and as you really need to be staying below the 3500kg threshold(I believe in some countries, certain towns/villages "ban"/restrict/charge for  vehicles over that weight?) and if it is 3500kg gross, then a vehicle of that size/weight would leave very little payload for your "stuff"...

(..and as you'll be living out of it, not just "holidaying, you'll probably have a fair bit of that!).

Although whether or not they actually bother pulling/checking/weighing  MHs on the continent, I have no idea.. ?

Having said all of that, IF everything does check out okay(No damp,axle/payload weights, everything works, it's been maintained correctly and is mechanically sound, (with some proof of service history etc) etc...and you are aware and prepared for, the fuel costs, then it may do you...?

But DON'T  "fall for" something just because it's the first thing you've looked at ..or because time may be an issue...or because it's local(ish)...
