Well actually i agree & have said all along i do, but you cant insist that insurance companys load a novices premium without proving you can do it yourself

As for trying to derail your post your wrong, normally when someone asks this question, all i ask is have they read the Highway code recently & EVERYONE scarpers

So for once it's been nice to argue blacks white for the sake of arguing

Hi Mick,

I haven't read the highway code since I took my driving test and back then it was only a few simple questions added on to the end of my practical driving test! I bet if I were re-tested on it I would FAIL miserably as would most of us if we were 100% truthful?

I think you are quite correct in what you say and if the Insurance Companies were to add clauses and conditions to our motorhome policies then these rules MUST apply to EVERYONE regardless as to whether they are long term drivers or not!

Hope you are still enjoying your new motorhome Mick - we are too busy right now to get away in ours as all our new stock is coming in for the forthcoming season so we are up to our neck in it all at the moment - but as soon as we get the chance we are planning a trip to bonny ole Scotland! Have you got any trips planned?

All the best,

Sue

The problem as I see it is the amount of new people coming into Motorcaravanning, especially older people who have never driven a van or anything larger. Also vans are getting bigger, longer and heavier. People upgrading from a towed shed want all their little luxuries.

There is also one other point. Correct me if Im wrong. but Motorcaravans arent subjected to crash tests AFAIK. Their base vehicles/chassis may be but the finished vans arent.

People upgrading from a towed shed - have you seen the size of caravans these days? I reckon anyone capable of handling a ruddy great 4 x 4 with a 26 feet caravan on the back can handle a large motorhome.

The safety aspect worries me - that's one of the reasons I changed back from a motorhome to a caravan, as far as I can tell a modern coachbuilt motorhome would collapse like a pack of cards in the way that a caravan does in the event of a serious collision. OK for the driver and front seat passenger, but what about the family in the back?

Having said that, serious collisions involving motorhomes do fortunately seem to be a rarity.

Now please can we all start being nice to each other, there's no need for name calling. I think we are all on the same side.

My fault Mick for encouraging you to put your opinion across on this subject!

I am sure you were only being your usual jovial self when you made the comment about killing the post,it was said in your usual good humour

I do agree the good will and harmony that usually abounds on this forum seems to be a little thin on the ground at the moment so lets cut out the insults and name calling,it's not big and it's not clever.

Oh,and I still think I am pretty good at driving our Motorhome!

I have just changed my MH at the recent Caravan and Boat show, now gone up to 8m in lenth, (6 wheeler) - That was an expensive day out!!

Have driven many cars, including towing, trailor tent, folding camper. Started with 6m MH then 6.8m now this. But saying that the previous S class merc I had was 5m long, with a trailer made it considerable longer than the MH.

I think it is about your attitude to driving, some people can jump into any vehicle and feel confident to drive it, and it shows, others approach it with a the wrong state of mind. This does not mean that you should just jump in and floor it wheeel spinning out the yard.

Tests would be a good idea, but we are already subject to so many limitations, where would it stop, someone mentioned about the MPV's in that case you should take an appropriate test. Then their is the issue of driving with trailors, I have seen peole who can not reverse to save their life, let alone with a trailor. So as I say where would it stop,

Great reading all the posts very ammusing.

Some motorhome insurance companies do give a discount if you have taken the CC or CCC motorhome maneouvring course, so they obviously consider the training worthwhile.

Funnily enough I found a booklet called 'Test Yourself on the Highway code' as I was tidying my bookcase today.

It lists 500 questions and this is one of them:

Q4. How many glamour girls can be got into a mini-cab?

Answer: I don't know but it is an offence to carry passengers in such numbers or in such a manner as to cause danger.

I reckon this book must have been from when I took my test in the 70s, mind you all the other questions seem valid!!!
