Got a telephone call today from the father in law whom we were due to meet at ingleton in ten days time.

He was all set to suprise us and had not told us he had traded his three year old MH in for a brand new one. Yesterday he filled it up with fuel for the easter weekend loaded it all up and went for a quick test run.

After a few miles he said that his brand new pride and joy conked out. He then could not restart the MH and had to call for assistance. obiously very annoyed that his new pride and joy had broken down with only a few miles on the clock. It was recovered to the MH dealers that he brought from.

On investigation it all became evident. He had filled the fuel tank to the top with petrol. Are you getting my drift yet? yep that's right he filled it to the brim with petrol. However his new MH is of course diesel!!!!!!!

He now has to pay to have it repaired and the dealer is claiming 3 thousand pounds for the privelege of repairing it. He is as you can imagine mortified. I can't believe that  they want to charge so much.

but what a disaster for him, anyone else made this error? if so what did you have to pay for the repair?

i work in the motor trade and putting petrol in a diesel can do a lot of damage as the petrol tends to wash everything clean and diesel is oily so it lubes the pump and bores so the diesel pump is running with no lube when petrol goes though it causing a fair amount of damage

---£3k is a rip-off--if the van conked out soon after he had filled with petrol--all that will be needed is vehicle recovered -tank completely drained & the contaminated fuel disposed of--fuel filter changed & tank fully filled with diesel----£3-400-maybe?-----If its £3k I suggest he ask for a breakdown of costs---I cant see how it would have damaged the pump in such a short time--

---I could add that as he has presumably just spent £25k+ with this dealer--they should have familarised him complety with the van on handover including pointing out it was diesel--

Never done it myself, was once on a petrol forecourt when a guy in a Jag with double tanks filled them both up with diesel instead of petrol!! (long time ago before the made the fillers a different size)

Bet he is really ped off though.

Will it be ready to meet you?
